RAIN SYSTEM MOVES AWAY AS COOLER WINDS SET IN ACROSS FIJI.

RAIN SYSTEM MOVES AWAY AS COOLER WINDS SET IN ACROSS FIJI

The rain bands that brought rainfall across Fiji on Monday have now moved away from the group. As indicated in the satellite image below, the main area of cloud and rain has shifted eastwards.

With the main rain-producing clouds moving away, generally fine conditions are expected to prevail across Fiji, with only brief isolated showers passing through from time to time.

These passing showers are associated with the Low Pressure System marked by “X” on the satellite image. This same system was also responsible for the increase in winds experienced over parts of the Western Division last night. For those wondering if another system was approaching — WORRY NAHI, this system is also moving away.

Looking ahead, southerly winds will gradually become more dominant, bringing cooler air across the country. Cabe mai na cagi mai na ceva, lutu tale mai na batabata.

As we continue through our normal cooler season, communities are encouraged to stay warm and take care, especially during the cooler mornings and nights.

Weather Update: Main Rain Clouds Moving Away from Fiji, Strong Winds Continue

The latest satellite imagery from the Fiji Meteorological Service shows two main cloud bands currently influencing Fiji’s weather, identified as Box A and Box B.

☁️ Box A: This cloud band was responsible for the rainfall experienced across parts of Fiji overnight. It has now moved over the Lau Group and is tracking eastwards towards Tonga and beyond. This system is gradually moving away from Fiji.

☁️ Box B: A second cloud band currently lies just west of Fiji. It is expected to move southeastwards, passing south of Kadavu Island.

Although the main rain bands are moving away, some cloud and moisture associated with the trough that passed overnight remain over parts of the country, resulting in cloudy periods with isolated showers. Uca e sa warai! — the rain is easing.

With the main rain-producing systems moving away, heavy rain warnings have started to be lifted for most parts of Fiji.

However, a Strong Wind Warning remains in force for all Fiji waters. East to northeast winds of 20 to 25 knots are expected, with rough to very rough seas continuing.

🌊 Mariners and communities near coastal areas are advised to continue exercising caution and remain alert.

103km Seedlings Transportation: Supporting Farmers Through Research and Innovation

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting Fiji's sugarcane farmers, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) recently assisted Ms. Yoga Wati, a women farmer from the Lomawai Sector in Sigatoka, whose 1-acre field is comprised of a section prone to waterlogging and saline conditions, posing significant challenges to sugarcane production.

Recognizing the challenges faced by the farmer, and following consultations with the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Fiji, Acting CEO Sharneel Kumar spearheaded efforts to identify a suitable sugarcane variety capable of performing under these adverse conditions.

To support this initiative, SRIF supplied 40 trays of Galoa variety seedlings for planting on the affected area as a field trial. The seedlings were transported 103km from SRIF's Rarawai Substation Seed Nursery in Ba to the farm site in Lomawai, Sigatoka, demonstrating the Institute's commitment to ensuring that research and technology reach farmers where they are needed most.

The objective of the trial is to evaluate the adaptability and performance of the Galoa variety under waterlogged and saline conditions while providing the farmer with a practical solution to improve productivity on the affected land.

This intervention reflects SRIF's commitment to delivering research-driven solutions and demonstrates the Institute's dedication to supporting farmers through innovation, collaboration, and the application of science-based technologies to address real-world challenges in the sugar industry.
