7 Finalists announced in Learning Scenarios Competition 2016

The Inspiring Science Education Competition committee are delighted to announce the finalists in the ISE Scenarios Competition which closed on 4 March 2016. The aim of this competition is to highlight excellence in the creation of learning scenarios or lessons based on the tools, resources and materials available in the Inspiring Science Education Portal.

This year’s ISE competition has been all about recognising and rewarding teachers who create the most innovative and inspiring lessons and scenarios for others to use based on the tools, resources and materials available in the portal. This portal provides opportunities to make science education more challenging, more playful and above all more imaginative and inspiring for today’s students.

Finalists will take part in the Inspiring Science Education International Conference taking place in Athens on 22-24 April where the overall winner will be announced. The prize for the winner of this year’s competition is kindly sponsored by Vernier, partners in the ISE project.

Our thanks to everyone who took part and especially to the competition’s hard-working team of judges whose names will be announced in the ISE website along with more details about the finalists in the coming days.

ERATOSTHENESIN KOE 21.3.2016 - LASKE MAAPALLON YMPÄRYSMITTA!

Maanantaina 21.3.2016 sadat koulut ympäri Eurooppaa osallistuvat maapallon ympärysmitan laskemiseen Eratosthenesin yli 2000 vuotta sitten käyttämällä menetelmällä. Osallistu sinäkin oman luokkasi kanssa!

Erastothenesin koe on varsin yksinkertainen ja toiminnallinen koe mahdollistaa sen, että opitusta jää pysyvä ja monipuolinen muistijälki. Kokeessa mitataan auringon korkeuskulma. Tämän jälkeen mittaustulokset yhdistetään muualla samanaikaisesti tehdyn mittauksen tuloksiin, ja maapallon ympärysmitta voidaan laskea!

TULE RAKENTAMAAN SISUNEN – IHAN OIKEA SUPERTIETOKONE!

Supertietokoneen rakennuspäivät Heurekassa 5.–6.3. klo 11–16

Kenellä tahansa on nyt mahdollisuus päästä rakentamaan toimiva supertietokone, Sisunen. Heurekassa maaliskuun ensimmäisenä viikonloppuna järjestettävissä työpajoissa lapset ja koululaiset pääsevät CSC:n asiantuntijoiden ohjaamana kasaamaan ja kokeilemaan laitetta, jonka laskentateho on monikertainen tavalliseen kotikoneeseen verrattuna.

Kun Sisunen on saatu valmiiksi, osallistujat pääsevät testaamaan järjestelmää ja kokeilemaan esimerkiksi supertietokoneen tehoja esitteleviä demoja, ohjelmoimaan monimutkaisia tehtäviä sekä tekemään 3D-mallinnusta avoimen lähdekoodin Blender-ohjelmistolla.

Sisusen rakentamisen lisäksi perheen pienemmille on tarjolla superkoneaiheisia väritystehtäviä ja askartelua. Isommat pääsevät näyttämään taitonsa supertietokoneisiin liittyvässä, avaruuteen sijoittuvassa Shooting Stars -tietokonepelissä. Paikalla voi osallistua myös tietovisaan ja testata, oletko supertietokoneguru.

Save the dates for the Eratosthenes Experiment!

***19-20 March 2015***

Schools all over the world are invited to celebrate science and education by calculating the circumference of the Earth using eLearning educational tools and simple instruments. Teachers and students will be able to use specially created Inspiring Science Education learning scenario demonstrators. Re-creating this simple experiment helps measure students problem solving competency.
