Bright sky. Shallow water.
Steve Irwin, 44.
More than a week into filming Ocean's Deadliest.
Bad weather paused production.
So he and cameraman Justin Lyons took a small inflatable.
Just extra footage for Bindi's show.
Found a huge stingray resting.
Plan was simple.
Steve swims behind. Justin films it swimming away.
Then it lifted. Struck.
Barb went up, again and again.
Shadow mistaken for a shark, Justin thought.
He kept filming. Then turned.
Water turning red.
Barb had pierced left chest.
Through the heart.
They pulled him into the inflatable.
Still conscious.
Every breath harder.
Justin yelling to press the wound.
Crew yelling to keep fighting.
Think of Terri. Bindi. Robert.
Steve looked at him calm.
Said it quiet.
"I'm dying."
On Croc One, CPR nonstop.
Boat racing to Low Isles.
Terri in Tasmania with Bindi, 8, and Robert, 2.
Too severe. Pronounced before helicopter arrived.
Footage was never released.
Terri said destroyed. Justin said he never wanted anyone to see his friend die.
Private farewell first.
Then public.
And 8-year-old Bindi:
"My Daddy was my hero."
