We investigated the prevalence of alpha-synuclein (a marker for Parkinson's, Dementia with Lewy bodies and Multiple System Atrophy, amongst other disorders) in a cohort of patients who died outside of hospital in Tampere, across the adult life span and found 1) it's more common than we expected (in 9% of those aged >50 years) and 2) the accumulation of alpha-synuclein starts much earlier in middle age than previously seen (54 years old was the youngest case, whereas other studies have used 62 years as the lowest age).

For those with high school aged kids interested in science, we're running a molecular biology course over the last weekend in April. It's free, will have instruction in both English and Finnish and will be run by real scientists! 🥳🧑‍🔬🧬🔬🧪
