DSII - Doctoral School of Industry Innovations
DSII works closely with industry to solve meaningful real-life problems. It is founded and run by Tampere University and Tamlink Ltd.
The research topics come from companies and the dissertation work is done in collaboration with industry partners. DSII provides companies with access to the latest research knowledge and the opportunity to address research questions that are the key to developing their business activities. For doctoral students DSII offers a unique opportunity to undertake dissertation research, gain an understanding of innovation methods, tackle real business challenges and expand their professional networks.

DSII doctoral researchers took a well-deserved break from research and enjoyed a boat trip to Viikinsaari, a lake island just off the shores of Tampere, for a day of recreation in good company đÂ
đż We enjoyed a walk around the island, recharging in the island's serene and protected nature reserve area.
âłThe day also included some friendly competition in the form of a DSII mini golf tournament.Â

Position: Doctoral Researcher Power Electronics
Tampere University, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences is seeking a Doctoral Researcher to complete a four-year dissertation project under the joint supervision of a university professor and a company representative. The partner company for this position is GE Vernova.
GE Vernova is a leader in energy technology, focuses on innovative solutions in power generation, grid infrastructure, and energy storage to support the transition to sustainable energy systems.
The purpose of the job is to create new knowledge for academia and industry in the field of power electronics. The position requires a background and/or interest and/or experience in power electronics (power converters, modulation methods), control theory (modern control theory, optimal control), mathematics and optimization (convex and nonconvex optimization), embedded programming, and microprocessors.
At the university, the work will be supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Petros Karamanakos.

At DSIIâs May meeting, we welcomed Ville Korpiluoto from Solita, who discussed the role of research in digital consulting. The session also featured a presentation by DSII doctoral researcher Herbert Hartl, who shared progress in his research on ultrafine aerosol measurements.
Herbert Hartl is conducting his research as part of the DSII Scale-up pilot program, a collaboration between Tampere University, University of Helsinki, and Tamlink. The initiative is funded by the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation and participating companies. Hartl's research is carried out in collaboration with Airmodus.

DSII recently had the opportunity to visit Tammervoimaâs waste power plant TarastenjĂ€rvi, a key piece of energy infrastructure in Tampere region â»ïž
Tammervoima plant offers an example of how societyâs unavoidable waste can be transformed into useful thermal and electrical energy. The plant is jointly owned by Tampereen Energia and Pirkanmaan JĂ€tehuolto.

DSII's most recent graduate Panagiotis Korkos shares how determination and being innovative guided him through his doctoral studies.
đĄ The goal of Korkosâs research was to create a data driven method for detecting faults in the hydraulic pitch system of wind turbines, using only data coming from already installed systems in the wind turbines.

DSIIâs monthly doctoral researchersâ meeting provoked ideas and discussion by combining a research presentation with a look at practical innovation environments.
DSII doctoral researcher Ville Karlsson gave a presentation on the research he is doing in collaboration with Huawei Finland and Tampere University to find solutions to the issue of energy consumption in Standard Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs).
The meeting concluded with a visit to FabLab Tampere, where we explored digital fabrication technologies and learned how ideas can be developed into physical prototypes.
