Doctoral dissertation Lassi Raami ⚙️📚

In his doctoral dissertation, MSc (Tech) Lassi Raami investigated how the properties of stainless steels can be enhanced by utilizing novel heat treatments. Using computer modelling and empirical experiments, he showed that quenching and partitioning (Q&P) heat treatment can be applied for creating a multiphase microstructure into stainless steel, which increases the strength of the steel. Furthermore, the studies showed that the selection of the right heat treatment parameters can significantly improve the cavitation erosion resistance of the studied steels. The results could therefore be applied for prolonging the service life of components used in environments prone to cavitation.

The doctoral dissertation of MSc (Tech) Lassi Raami in the field of Materials Science titled "Quenching and Partitioning of Martensitic Stainless Steels: Heat Treatment, Microstructure, Mechanical Properties, and Cavitation Erosion Resistance" was publicly examined at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University on August 7th 2026.

The Opponents were Associate Professor Ilana Timokhina from the Luleå University of Technology in Sweden and Doctor, R&D Principal Expert Severi Anttila from Outokumpu Stainless Oy. The Custos was Professor Pasi Peura from the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Tampere University.

Opintoavautumiskahvit järjestetään tämän viikon torstaina 17.9. klo 14 MIK:in kiltahuoneella PB006. Keskustelun aiheena on OPSin 27-30 dippavaiheen muutokset, joista materiaalitekniikan opetushenkilökunta kertoo. Study Coffee Break 📚

Study coffee break will be held this Thursday, September 17th, at 2 PM in the MIK guild room (PB006). The topic of discussion will be the changes to the 27-30 curriculum in the Master’s degree phase, which will be presented by the materials engineering teaching staff. The changes will come into force next autumn, so come and share your opinion together with your friends! Snacks and coffee will be served☕️😋.

Doctoral Dissertation Erkka Virtanen 🔬⚙️

In his doctoral dissertation, MSc (Tech) Erkka Virtanen (second from right in the picture) studied how hidden (subsurface) fatigue cracks initiate and grow inside large bevel gears used in heavy and marine industries. Using experiments and simulations, he showed that cracks can form below the surface but typically grow slowly and do not immediately lead to gear failure. Current industry practices rely on periodic inspections, and clear criteria for acceptable subsurface damage are lacking. The findings can help engineers better assess gear condition, avoid unnecessary part replacements, and improve the safety and cost-efficiency of machinery.

The Opponents were Professor Karsten Stahl from the Technical university of Munich in Germany and Professor Reza Talemi from KU Leuven in Belgium. The Custos was Associate Professor Auezhan Amanov from the faculty of Materials Science and Environmental Engineering.

Introducing Mahdieh Safyari ⚙️

Last spring Dr. Mahdieh Safyari joined our faculty as an Assistant Professor in Metals Technology.

Dr. Mahdieh Safyari earned her PhD from the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Japan. She has developed an international research career across Austria (AIT) and Finland (LUT – Mechanics of Materials group), working as a scientist and postdoctoral researcher.

Her research is driven by physical metallurgy of advanced and conventional alloys, uncovering how microstructure evolves during processing and how it ultimately controls performance. She focuses on designing metals that are not only stronger and more reliable, but also more sustainable and resistant to demanding environments such as hydrogen exposure. By combining advanced experiments, simulations, and digital tools, she accelerates the discovery and optimization of next-generation alloys.

Key Research Areas:
- Materials for hydrogen environments and hydrogen embrittlement
- Sustainable and recycled metals with reduced CO₂ emissions and energy use
- Welding metallurgy and the microstructural integrity of joints under cyclic or monotonic loads.
- Additive manufacturing and defect–property relationships
- Conventional and advanced manufacturing processes including rolling and AM
- Digital workflows and AI-driven materials optimization.

Materiaalitekniikan koulutus tarjoaa erinomaiset mahdollisuudet kansainvälistymiseen! Tampereen yliopistossa voit suorittaa materiaalitekniikan DI-tutkinnon kansainvälisenä kaksoistutkintona Universidad Politécnica de Madridin (UPM) kanssa. Opinnoissa opiskelet osan DI-tutkinnostasi Tampereella ja osan Madridissa. Pääset hyödyntämään kahden yliopiston opintotarjontaa ja näet kotikampuksen lisäksi Madridia. Lopputuloksena saat tutkintotodistukset molemmista yliopistoista.

A double degree in Madrid?! 🇪🇸

Materials Science and Engineering education offers excellent opportunities for internationalization! At Tampere University, you can complete a Master of Science (MSc) in Materials Science and Engineering as an international double degree with the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). During your studies, you will study partly in Tampere and partly in Madrid. You will be able to utilize the study offerings of two universities and see Madrid in addition to your home campus. As a result, you will receive diplomas from both universities.

The application time is annually in May for Tampere University students. If you have any questions, please be in contact with the responsible person (University Lecturer Jarno Jokinen) or education specialist (Jenni Lassila).
