They once sat in these classrooms. Today, they return with experience, insight, and impact. Our Alumni Meetup was filled with real stories of growth, resilience, and professional success. It was a powerful reminder that every journey begins somewhere. Listening to their professional milestones, challenges, and growth stories inspired our current students to dream bigger and aim higher.

So… what’s a laavu?
It’s a traditional Finnish open shelter with a fireplace in the center where you can gather to relax, enjoy cozy fire, grill sausages, share stories, and enjoy nature (yes, even in the cold 😄).
Student life here isn’t just lectures and deadlines, it’s cozy fires, fresh air, and friendships under the northern sky.
And guess what?
We gather here every Tuesday at 7 PM.
Cold air outside, warm friendships inside.

Meet Takumi ! a second year NoTo student that is doing his last semester in the University of Akureyri in Iceland 🇮🇸 !

"Hello I'm Takumi from NoTo, currently doing a erasmus exchange in university of Akureyri in Iceland"

1. Why did you choose Iceland as a destination for a semester abroad ?
I'm in the Northern Tourism program, but I have not experienced about any other country in the North. I was also dreaming about seeing Icelandic Nature, and I also wanted to study somewhere I would not visit or live if I miss this opportunity, so I decided to go to Akureyri in Iceland.

2. How do you like it there so far ?
I really like, and enjoy nature in Iceland. The town is in the middle of the fjord and it is surrounded by mountains. I also whale watching in the school trip, hot spring in the lagoon, and saw huge northern lights ! I tried fermented shark but that was horrible 😂.

3. What are the main differences you noticed between the University of Lapland and the University of Akureyri ?
University of Akureyri is small and there are only about 30 exchange students, so everyone knows everyone, which is so homely and cosy. Also many classes are held online or recorded because more than half of the students are living outside of this town.

4. What are your plans after graduation ?
Still thinking. But I want to work in a company or organisation that I can connect Japan and Finland or the north with the power of tourism, so that I can use what I have studied in ULapland."

In NoTo you have the possibility to do a semester abroad in a European University member of UArcitc (Iceland, Norway or Sweden). There are also other possibilities of internships or short exchanges within the European UArctic community.

Meet Kaitlin ! She was the social media account manager of TourCM last year ! Now she is in her second year of NoTo, and we wanted to give you some news !

1. How's your second year of NoTo going ?
I'm in the process of writing my thesis on language use among tourists in Rovaniemi. It's going well (I hope 🫣) and I'm also taking some finnish classes. Mostly I'm working but it's still a nice balance between work and studies !

2. Did you enjoy being the social media account manager last year ?
Yesss, and actually now I'm one of the wellness pass ambassadors too ! I liked that with the social media you got to take some online courses and learn about AI and algorithms, something I never studied before !

3. What do you do beside studying ?
I'm working in a tour agency part time, but I'm also on the ESN board, so you can find me at many student events too 🥳. In my free time, I like going to the gym, study languages and watch Netflix 🫶.

4. Do you have any plans after graduation ?
Hopefully I will find some work in Finland, I'd like to stay for a few more years and then let's see where my life takes me ☀️.
