A little look back to summer from a cold October evening. We had some incredible orchids this year, some of the biggest I’ve ever seen. It’s incredible what grows on the stone track and around the margins, places where the thicker vegetation doesn’t swamp them. I love finding different ways to document the unfolding story of nature recovery.

Happy October everyone! It’s Morag here, taking over from Kaisa. I’ll be sharing some images and stories from the 11acres where I live. After 17 years here nature is making an incredible recovery. What started as a bare field is now abundant with vegetation and all sorts of creatures.

This month, one of ICM Photo Academy teachers Kaisa Sirén shared her story of how she became an ICM photographer.

”There is a personal story behind the words ”Visualising the Unseen.”
I grew up in a family of seven children, and I was the youngest. There was a sixteen-year age difference between me and my oldest sister. My older brothers and sisters were already growing up and doing things that I was simply too young to join. They went out, had their own lives and their own adventures, while I often had to stay at home.
I often felt left out and unseen.
But looking back, I don't see that feeling as something negative anymore. It has become one of the building blocks of my art. I think it taught me to notice what is easily overlooked. To look beyond the obvious. To pay attention to feelings, moods and things that don't necessarily announce themselves.
ICM has given me a way to make those things visible.
I don't photograph what is unseen literally. I try to give it a visual form through colour, movement, light and atmosphere.
Perhaps this is one of the reasons ICM feels so natural to me. What once was simply a feeling has become part of the way I see.
And that has become one of the foundations of my art: Visualising the Unseen.

This month, one of ICM Photo Academy teachers Kaisa Sirén will share her story of how she became an ICM photographer.

”Today, there are four words or phrases that describe the framework of my work:
Forest walker.
Colour seeker.
Outsider.
Visualising the unseen.
They are the threads running through my photographs and the way I experience the world. I walk in forests. I look for colour. I often feel more comfortable observing from the outside. And I use my camera to explore things that cannot always be seen; Moods, memories, feelings and inner landscapes.
Looking back, I feel very lucky that I discovered ICM almost by accident in Iceland.
Photojournalism taught me how to tell stories about the world. ICM gave me a way to tell the stories that come from within me. That is why I do ICM. It allows me to make visible something that would otherwise remain unseen.

This month, one of ICM Photo Academy teachers Kaisa Sirén will share her story of how she became an ICM photographer.

”Very quickly, I knew that ICM could give me something I had been searching for without really knowing it; A way to express my inner visions and my soul landscapes.
There are things that cannot be photographed literally such as a memory, a feeling, or a mood. The way a forest feels when you are alone in it. The feeling a particular colour can create.
With ICM, I don't have to show exactly what was in front of my camera, I can translate my experience of it into an image.
That is what makes ICM so important to me. It is my way of visualising the unseen.
I started working with ICM in 2004, and since 2017, all of my non-commissioned photographic work has been ICM.”

”The more I explored Intentional Camera Movement, the more I understood why it felt so right for me.
My career in photojournalism had taught me to record excatly what was happening in front of me.
ICM allowed me to do almost the opposite. I didn't have to describe a place literally. Instead I could respond to it creatively.
To the colours. The movement. The light. The atmosphere. I could photograph not only what I saw, but what I felt.
And suddenly I understood that ICM was the perfect counterpart to photojournalism. One was rooted in the visible world. The other gave me a way to explore what lies underneath it.”

This month, one of ICM Photo Academy teachers Kaisa Sirén will share her story of how she became an ICM photographer.

”My relationship with intentional camera movement (ICM) began almost by accident.
I was travelling in Iceland, and the weather was cloudy for most of the week. One day I sitting on a moving bus, and I started photographing the colours of the Icelandic soil through the window. I began experimenting with different shutter speeds. Slowly, I made the exposures longer and longer. I didn’t have a plan, I was just experimenting.
I took my first ICM photos on that bus and it was the start of a wonderful journey.”

This month, one of ICM Photo Academy teachers Kaisa Sirén will share her story of how she became an ICM photographer.

”I have always wanted photography to be part of both my work and my free time. But I needed those two things to feel different. My commercial photojournalism work was demanding and rewarding, but my personal photography needed to give something back to me. I wanted it to recharge my batteries.
My personal photojournalism projects still felt too close to work. So I slowly started searching for a more creative way of photographing. Something that would be completely different from my professional work.”
