The idea developed from the frustration that the use of mineral side streams and the involved opportunities raised no interest in the industry producing these side streams. The business has grown steadily since the company was established.

In the world there are around 17,000 to 23,000 universities depending on the method of calculation. University of Oulu is usually ranked in the top three per cent. UniOulu’s strengths lays on its publishing activity in high level publications (e.g. Nature, Science) but also citation indexes. In the fields of science, UniOulu ranks well in e.g. medicine, life sciences, biology, information technology and data processing, electrical engineering, geography.
