Youth workshop in Fab Lab Envisioning Tech and Democracy: AI for social justice

Envisioning Tech & Democracy: AI for Social Justice Workshop provided young participants with a space to explore how AI can be used to build a more just and democratic society and to create small objects related to the workshop theme using digital fabrication methods available at the FabLab.

In the workshop, each participant is designing and building their own personal Safe Space artwork, using layered laser-cut collages and LED lights programmed by the participants themselves.

New Workshop has launched!

The Safe Spaces workshop series started at the Super Fab Lab in Oulu. The Safe Spaces concept invites participants to reflect on what a safe space means to them personally and how to turn those ideas into artworks through digital fabrication.

During the previous Lumo Light Festival in Oulu, ARTiFAB presented Hidden Voices at Cafe Konstantiina — a community-centered light art installation created through our Selfie Lightbox workshops.

Workshop - Envisioning Tech & Democracy: AI for social justice Welcome to the workshop for young people to explore, how artificial intelligence (AI) can help build a more just and democratic society!

The Safe Spaces workshop, created in collaboration with artist Shima Salehi, has been brought to life at the university FabLab facilities by the ARTiFAB crew and an amazing group of young participants.

The Safe Spaces art project is carried out in collaboration with Oulun kaupungin nuorten työpajat

During yesterday’s workshop session, the young participants received guidance on programming LED lights. LEDs are intended to be integrated into the final works.

The Safe Spaces is a great fit as ARTiFABI’s opening project for Oulu’s European Capital of Culture year 2026.

Oulu-based artist Anni Arffman shares in Mun Oulu how entrepreneurship, collaboration and continuous learning shape her everyday work as an artist - and how FabLabs and their networks have become an important part of her practice. Through FabLabs, Anni has found spaces for learning, collaboration and experimentation beyond traditional art settings The article also reveals that Anni is currently planning a workshop series with ARTiFAB, exploring new ways to connect artistic thinking with digital fabrication skills.

Hidden Voices has arrived at Cafe Konstantiina

Step inside (or simply peek through the window) to experience a glowing light installation created with Oulu’s youth.

A collaboration between (), John Collingswood (TaikaBox), Oulun kaupungin nuorten työpajat and Kulttuurivoimala - Culture Power Station ry, the piece explores identity, visibility, and belonging.

Hidden Voices light art installation was featured in two events held at the Oulun yliopisto - University of Oulu in the past month!

In ITEE Discovery Quest students of all faculties were invited to explore the research done in the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE). The Super Fab Lab Oulu 10th anniversary event gathered together Fab Lab leaders around the country, Super Fab Lab Oulu’s staff members, and members from ITEE, Faculty of Technology and companies in the region.
