“Linguistic and Bodily Involvement in Multicultural Interaction” ("LinBo") is one of the new spearhead projects of the Eudaimonia Institute. It researches how mutual understanding is achieved in multicultural settings through linguistic and bodily resources.
In particular, “LinBo” scrutinizes the use of different languages and other means of communication such as facial expressions and gestures in the interactions between immigrants and native Finns.
The project analyses videorecorded conversations as well as interviews to closely understand the linguistic and bodily resources employed by both groups in an effort to communicate, along with the thoughts and ideologies they hold about these interactions.
The overall goal is to increase our understanding of linguistically asymmetrical relationships in multicultural settings and to help the integration of migrants into Finnish society.
