Our speaker introductions continue! Last week, we introduced the two speakers of the first presentation in our Opening Session. Today, it’s time to meet the speaker of the second presentation. Meet Professor Robert Ross:
Can someone be a “non-responder” to exercise?
For decades, exercise has been promoted as one of the most powerful tools for improving health. Yet the same exercise programme can produce very different results in different people.
Why?
It’s one of the fascinating questions in modern exercise medicine—and one that Professor Robert Ross has spent much of his career to investigating.
Professor Ross of Queen’s University, Canada, is internationally recognized for his research in precision exercise medicine, obesity, cardiometabolic health, and individual variability in responses to exercise. His work has helped advance our understanding of why people can respond differently to the same exercise programme.
His REVISE (Response Variability to Exercise) study is examining why some individuals show little or no improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness following a standardized exercise programme, and whether changing the amount or intensity of exercise can change that response. This raises a fundamental question for individualized exercise medicine:
When someone appears not to respond to exercise, is it truly a lack of response—or might a different exercise dose produce a different outcome?
At the 24th International Puijo Symposium, Professor Ross will present:
“Individual Response to Standardized Exercise: When Exercise Doesn’t Work as Expected”
His lecture will explore why individuals respond differently to the same exercise programme and how more individualized approaches to exercise prescription might help optimize outcomes.
We are delighted to welcome Professor Robert Ross to Kuopio in June 2027.
Early Bird registration is still open! The lowest registration fee is available until 30 September 2026. We look forward to welcoming you to the 24th International Puijo Symposium in Kuopio in June 2027.
