Hoitotieteen laitos onnittelee väitöksestä:
Terveystieteiden maisteri Marja Vellosen väitöskirja Improving the flow of medication information in home care. An intervention study (Lääkehoidon tiedonkulun parantaminen kotihoidossa. Interventiotutkimus) tarkastettiin terveystieteiden tiedekunnassa 21.8.2026. Vastaväittäjänä toimi professori Riitta Suhonen Turun yliopistosta ja kustoksena professori Tarja Välimäki Itä-Suomen yliopistosta.

Tänään 20.8.2026 hoitotieteen laitoksen väki vietti Professori Marja Härkäsen professorijuhlaa Savonlinnan auringonpaisteessa. Maisemat ja puitteet olivat silmiä hivelevät. Saimme nauttia runsaasta kattauksesta paikallisia lähiruokaherkkuja. Tunnelma oli rento ja lämminhenkinen.

Itä-Suomen yliopiston hoitotieteen laitoksella tehdyssä tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että oikeuspsykiatrisessa sairaalahoidossa raportoidut vakavat työväkivaltatilanteet eivät jakaudu tasaisesti, vaan kasautuvat tiettyihin arjen tilanteisiin, osaston tiloihin ja vuorokaudenaikoihin. Tutkimuksessa analysoitiin 956 hoitohenkilökunnan suomalaisessa oikeuspsykiatrisessa sairaalassa tekemää työväkivaltailmoitusta vuosilta 2020–2024.

Tulosten mukaan vakavat työväkivaltatilanteet liittyivät erityisesti päivän ja iltapäivän aktiivisiin osastotilanteisiin, ulkoilutilanteisiin, tiettyihin osaston tiloihin sekä osastojen välisiin eroihin. Vakavia tilanteita raportoitiin suhteellisesti enemmän esimerkiksi potilashuoneissa, eristyshuoneissa, ulkoilualueilla ja päivähuoneissa.

– Tulokset viittaavat siihen, että työväkivallan vakavuuteen liittyvät potilastekijöiden lisäksi myös osaston arki, tilanteet ja ympäristötekijät. Työväkivallan riski liittyy siihen, missä tilanteessa ollaan ja kuinka nopeasti hoitohenkilökunta voi saada tukea tilanteen kärjistyessä, kertoo väitöskirjatutkija Matias Karvonen Itä-Suomen yliopiston hoitotieteen laitokselta.

A recent study from the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Eastern Finland found that reported incidents of severe workplace violence in forensic psychiatric inpatient care are not evenly distributed, but are concentrated in specific everyday situations, ward areas and times of day. The researchers analysed 956 workplace violence incident reports filed by nursing staff in a Finnish forensic psychiatric hospital between 2020 and 2024.

According to the study, severe workplace violence incidents were associated particularly with busy daytime and afternoon periods on the ward, outdoor activities, specific ward areas and differences between wards. Severe incidents were reported proportionally more often in patient rooms, seclusion rooms, outdoor areas and day rooms, for example.

“The findings suggest that, in addition to patient-related factors, the severity of workplace violence is also associated with everyday ward routines, situations and environmental factors. The risk of workplace violence is linked to the situation at hand and to how quickly nursing staff can receive support if the situation escalates,” says Doctoral Researcher Matias Karvonen of the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Eastern Finland.

🌞The WARN-HARM research team from the Department of Nursing Science, University of Eastern Finland, has had an inspiring and enriching week participating in the NuPhaC Summer Symposium 2026 at the University of Alicante.

🌞Over the past five days, our team of four researchers has enjoyed countless learning opportunities, meaningful discussions, and valuable networking with colleagues from across Europe. Representatives from seven countries, in addition to Finland, came together to exchange knowledge and experiences related to nurse prescribing and its implementation in different healthcare systems.
We were especially excited to learn more about the new COST Action EU project on nurse prescribing, which will further strengthen international collaboration and research in this important area.

🌞A special highlight was the presentation by our colleague, Postdoctoral Researcher Saija Koskiniemi, who shared insights into nurse prescribing practices in Finland. She also introduced PRESAFE, an exciting new project launching this autumn, which has recently secured substantial Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) Programme funding.

🌞Beyond the academic programme, we were delighted by the warm hospitality and cultural experiences offered by our hosts. We had the opportunity to participate in guided tours of major university landmarks, historical sites, and the local Nursing Board, gaining valuable perspectives on the region's healthcare and educational heritage.

🌞Our heartfelt thanks go to Manuel Lillo-Crespo and the team at the University of Alicante for their exceptional hospitality and for creating such a welcoming, inspiring, and memorable experience.

Terveisin Itä-Suomen yliopiston hoitotieteen laitoksen henkilökunta

Itä-Suomen yliopiston ja Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitoksen (THL) tutkijoiden yhteisessä Family FINGER -tutkimuksessa selvitetään, miten elintapaohjaus vaikuttaa omaishoitajien mielialaan, elämänlaatuun ja muistitoimintoihin. Parhaillaan tutkimukseen rekrytoidaan omaishoitajia Pohjois-Savon alueelta.

Omaishoitajat ovat suomalaisen hoivajärjestelmän tukipilari, m***a heidän oma hyvinvointinsa jää usein vähälle huomiolle. – On välttämätöntä löytää keinoja tukea heidän terveyttään ja jaksamistaan, sanoo Family FINGER -tutkimusta Itä-Suomen yliopistossa johtava professori Tarja Välimäki.

Family FINGER -tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on vastata omaishoitajien kohtaamiin terveyshaasteisiin soveltamalla Suomessa kehitettyä, kansainvälisesti arvostettua FINGER-elintapaohjelmaa. Monipuolisen elintapaohjelman on osoitettu voivan parantaa ikääntyvien kognitiivisia toimintoja ja ehkäistä muistin heikentymistä. Lisäksi elintapamuutoksilla on havaittu myönteisiä vaikutuksia elämänlaatuun, toimintakykyyn ja sairauksien ehkäisyyn.

Last week on 24.-26.6., our department, together with the Alpha Beta Nu Sigma Chapter and the Sigma European Region, hosted the 8th Sigma European Regional Conference 2026 in Kuopio.

The Chair of the Conference Scientific Committee, Professor Tarja Välimäki, declared the conference open. Professor Tarja Kvist, Head of the Department of Nursing Science, brought greetings from the department, while Vice Rector Jussi Pihlajamäki brought greetings from the University of Eastern Finland. Sigma President Liz Westcott and Sigma European Region Coordinator Marie-Louise Luiking also addressed the conference on behalf of Sigma.

The conference gathered 230 participants from over 30 countries. Parallel sessions, poster presentations and a panel discussion offered something for everyone.

The conference featured excellent keynote speakers: Director, docent Heljä Lundgrén-Laine from HUS, Professor Tille Dinnes from the University of Antwerp, Professor Parveen Ali from the University of Sheffield, and Professor Allison Squires from New York University. Their presentations highlighted different perspectives on nursing.

The panel discussion, titled Possibilities and Challenges in Future Nursing Practice, Education, Research and Leadership, was moderated by Professor Tarja Kvist. The panel featured distinguished researchers and leaders: Sigma President Liz Westcott; Professor Allison Squires; Dean and Professor Marianne Baernholdt from the University of Virginia; Dr Dhurata Ivziku from Rome; and Dr Natalia Sak-Dankosky from the Medical University of Warsaw.

Chair of the Conference organizing committee, senior researcher Anu Nurmeksela closed the conference and collegues from the university of Coimbra welcomed us to the next Sigma European Regional Conference in 2028. See you in Portugal!

The weather was very favorable: the sun was shining and the temperature was pleasant, especially while much of Europe was experiencing extreme heat. Conference guests enjoyed Finland’s clean nature, Finnish food, cruises on Lake Kallavesi and visit at Kuopio University Hospital

Altogether we created great moments and memories. Thank you for everyone for your participation.

PRESAFE-​tutkimusryhmälle merkittävä rahoitus Lääkkeenmääräämisoikeudellisten hoitajien etävastaanoton kehittämiseen Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) -ohjelmasta

Tutkimusryhmän projektipäällikkönä toimii tutkijatohtori Saija Koskiniemi ja muut jäsenet ovat professori Marja Härkänen, väitöskirjatutkijat Maija Männistö ja Laura Hako sekä dosentti Krista Jokiniemi Itä-Suomen yliopiston hoitotieteen laitokselta.

Lääkkeenmääräämisoikeudellisten hoitajien etävastaanoton kehittämiseen rahoitusta Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic -ohjelmasta Itä-Suomen yliopisto toimii ensimmäistä kertaa NPA-ohjelmassa hankkeen päätoteuttajana.
