Congratulations, kood/Sisu Batch 1! 🎓💜

Last Friday, we gathered at the Viestikatu Campus to celebrate the graduation of our first batch. The day was filled with happiness, pride, and understandably, a little sadness too.

Batch 1 will always have a special place in kood/Sisu’s history. As our first students, they helped us develop the study programme, improve our ways of working, and build a stronger foundation for the batches that followed. Their experiences also helped us understand how we can better identify and support future software professionals.

Thank you for your hard work, courage, feedback, and trust in a programme that was still finding its shape. We are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved and excited to see where your journeys take you next.

Exciting news from kood/Sisu! 🔥

Juhamatti Huusko has been appointed as our new Interim Director and will begin in the role on 1 October.

At the same time, we are celebrating an extraordinary milestone: the first cohort of the kood/Sisu program has officially graduated, and we will celebrate their achievement together on campus on 25 September.

kood/Sisu developers built CargoLog for Vesirakennus Ojanen Oy. The tailored software supports load recording, management, and real-time monitoring.

Drivers now log each load using a mobile phone or tablet. The information becomes immediately available to site management and can be exported directly to Excel.

“The onboarding process for drivers has been particularly easy. When we first implemented it, I personally visited the site and demonstrated it on a single phone. After that, our more experienced drivers started training new employees. Even the newest drivers have given the same feedback: it's easy to learn and simple to use.”

What happens when childbirth begins unexpectedly far from a hospital and the first person assisting has no medical training?

In our third hackathon with Istekki, kood/Sisu developer teams explored an application concept for connecting people at the scene with an emergency dispatcher and a midwife.

The teams focused on usability, reliability, clear information, and reducing the user’s cognitive load. The winning concept combined medical experience with UX/UI expertise and expanded the idea to support users throughout pregnancy.

The challenge highlighted an essential part of modern software development. Building the interface is only one part of the work. Developers must also understand the user, the situation, and the wider system around the solution.

Head of kood/Sisu, Laura Nykänen, will be stepping down from her role in September to pursue new professional opportunities.

The Koodi / Sisu ry board has initiated the recruitment process for a successor, and our activities will continue as normal throughout the transition period.

Laura has played an essential role in setting up and developing kood/Sisu right from the very first operational days. The entire kood/Sisu community and the board thank her for her dedication, leadership, and contribution to achieving the journey.

Several organisations, such as Istekki, Novapolis and Documtec Oy have already worked with us to explore challenges through rapid prototyping and hackathon-style development. Instead of spending months debating potential solutions, teams can evaluate multiple approaches in a short timeframe. After that, it's easy to start building the actual finished product.

This approach is especially valuable when there is no single obvious answer. Exploring different concepts quickly can help identify risks, validate ideas, and uncover opportunities before committing to a larger project.

Where should AI actually be used?

It is one of the most common questions organisations ask today. The cost of AI tools, subscriptions and tokens is rising, creating the next challenge for businesses to focus their resources smartly.
