Today’s Finnish word is päiväreissu 🇫🇮

But while making this Reel, I realised I couldn’t just explain päiväreissu without talking about the difference between reissu and matka 😂

They can both mean “trip”, but they’re not quite interchangeable — and reissu is one of those words that makes your Finnish sound a little more natural and everyday.

So… a simple “word of the day” turned into a mini Finnish lesson 🤝🇫🇮

Did you know that one of the BIGGEST pieces of getting Finnish pronunciation right is getting your vowels right? 👀🇫🇮

Of course, it’s not the only thing — you also need to get the difference between single and double vowels/consonants, rhythm, stress, etc. right.

But your vowels are a HUGE place to start.

So let’s practise them together 👇

Repeat after me and, more importantly, watch my mouth and try to copy it.

Where your tongue is, how open your mouth is, and the shape your lips make all affect the sound — so don’t just listen. 👀

Watch → copy → repeat.

One of the biggest challenges when learning Finnish? Realising that the Finnish you learn in a textbook can sound VERY different from the Finnish you hear in everyday life 😂

For example:

Minä näen ➡️ mä nään
Haluatko sinä? ➡️ haluutsä?
Pidätkö sinä? ➡️ tykkäätsä?

And it’s not just about shortening words. Spoken Finnish has its own vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation patterns that you’ll hear constantly in everyday conversations.

That’s why I always teach both written AND spoken Finnish — so you can actually understand Finns when they start talking at normal speed. 😅
