What if the next deep-tech startup is already being developed inside a university lab?

Spinout is a deep-tech research commercialization program organized by Jyväskylä Entrepreneurship Society (JES) in collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä - Jyväskylän yliopisto. Participants will work with real JYU research and technologies, explore potential applications, customers, markets and business models, and develop ideas for turning academic research into real-world impact.

The programme takes place 9–10 December 2026 in Jyväskylä. On the first day, teams work on real research cases with researchers and mentors and pitch their commercialization ideas. The winning teams continue to the final stage on the second day.

🏆 €2,500 team prize for the overall winning team
✈️ €1,000 Deep-Tech Study Travel Grant to visit a European deep-tech ecosystem, learn from deep-tech companies, researchers and startup ecosystems, and bring that knowledge back to Jyväskylä
🎓 4–5 study credits for every participant

The programme is open to current students and alumni of both JYU and JAMK. You can apply individually or as a team. If applying as a team, the team must have exactly three members, and all three members must apply individually. You do not need to be a scientist or business student, Spinout is looking for curious people from different backgrounds who want to explore what challenging research and technology could become beyond the lab.

Applications are open until 20th November:

It's not often we get this many STRENT Group members together in one place — a moment worth capturing. Here, after having an interesting discussion on how to further develop the IBE program content and modes of completion.

Warm greetings from all of us! 👋

Several members of the JSBE Strategy & Entrepreneurship Group team participated in the Industry Studies Association (ISA) Conference at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, held on 3–5 August. 💫

Susanna Mansikkamäki presented two papers: Temporary Technology and the Maintenance of Technological Sovereignty, co-authored by Antti Sihvonen (University of Helsinki), Mirva Peltoniemi (Tampere University), and Kalle Pajunen (Tampere University); and Recursive Innovation and the Non-Linear Evolution of Technology: The Rise, Fall, and Re-Emergence of an Alternative Protein Source, co-authored by Kata Isenring (Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics), Mirva Peltoniemi (Tampere University), and Antti Sihvonen (University of Helsinki).

Juha-Antti Lamberg presented Industry Leadership in the Global Paper and Pulp Industry 1906–2026: Unchanging Complexity, Lost Opportunities, and Surprising Plasticity, co-authored by Christa Könönen (University of Jyväskylä) and Jari Ojala (University of Jyväskylä).

Jarmo Taskinen presented The Feel of Time: Emotions and Industry Renewal, co-authored by Roosa Oinasmaa (Tampere University of Applied Sciences) and Antti Sihvonen (University of Helsinki), and Juha-Antti Lamberg (University of Jyväskylä).

Kata Isenring presented Episodes of Substitution: Institutional Conditions and the Recurrent Emergence of Meat Alternatives in Finland, co-authored by Juha-Antti Lamberg (University of Jyväskylä).

Beyond the research and conference discussions, Oxford offered plenty of opportunities to explore its history. Christa Könönen and Kata Isenring joined a walking tour of Oxford’s historic buildings, adding another perspective to our time in the city.

Another highlight was the conference gala dinner in the historic dining hall of Balliol College — a memorable setting for an evening of good food, conversations, and connections.

All in all, a rewarding few days of research, discussions, and memorable moments in Oxford! 💫

🚘 Every year, Jyväskylä hosts the largest annual public event in the Nordics. During the FIA World Rally Championship, hundreds of thousands of fans, teams, media representatives, partners, and visitors gather in the city, creating a truly unique international atmosphere. Last year alone, the event attracted more than 260,000 visitors across its venues!

This world-class event also provides the perfect stage for innovation. 💫

Yesterday, our colleagues Mari Suoranta and Christa Könönen from JSBE Strategy & Entrepreneurship Group (STRENT) were part of the organizing team behind Rally Pitch, a startup event that brings startups and investors together in a way you won’t find anywhere else. Imagine pitching your startup while sitting in a rally car driven by four-time World Rally Champion Tommi Mäkinen. How cool is that?

The format is as exciting as it sounds, combining speed, entrepreneurship, and networking. This year’s Rally Pitch welcomed 100+ participants from 15 countries, once again demonstrating how world-class sporting events can also become powerful platforms for innovation, international collaboration, and new business opportunities.

Congratulations to the entire Rally Pitch team for delivering such a unique and inspiring event!

Our doctoral researcher Sjard Braun has just returned from presenting his research at the 46th Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference, held this year at the University of Alabama.

Reflecting on the conference, Sjard said: “What a privilege to share my work at the premier entrepreneurship research conference in the world. Presenting to such an engaged room of researchers was exactly the kind of rigorous, constructive dialogue BCERC is known for. Thank you to Babson College, the University of Alabama, and Culverhouse College of Business for hosting such an excellent event, and thank you to my co-author Mari Suoranta!”

The Innovative Marketing course, lectured by Mari Suoranta, concluded with an inspiring final seminar where student teams presented their solutions for real business case challenges.

One of the featured cases was for the startup Green Carbon, with two student teams presenting marketing ideas and strategic recommendations for the company. It was great to have Green Carbon CEO Matti Toivonen join us as a panelist for the presentations.

After the session, Matti shared that he was positively surprised by both the quality of the work and how well the teams had understood the assignments and identified the right focus areas. The presentations also sparked several concrete ideas and thoughts on how Green Carbon can move forward with its marketing efforts, and many of the insights will likely be utilized in their future marketing work. Thank you, Matti Toivonen, for joining the course and sharing your valuable feedback with our students! We also thank other guest speakers of the course. IBE alumnus, Marketing Project Manager Karim Elbanna of Neural DSP and Dr. Heini Vanninen of LUT University - Your insights on digital marketing and influencer marketing were highly appreciated!

🔆 The highlight of March for IBE Director Mari Suoranta was a visit to Lund University in Sweden. 🔆

Mari was invited there by a friend and earlier colleague from UC Berkeley Professor Charlotta Johnsson, founder of LU X-Lab makers space among other things. Mari visited several incubators such as HETCH, Ideon, E-commerce Park, LU Venture Lab. Learned about Helsingborg Innovation district development and talked with the LU Innovation director on research commercialization. She got Insights on LU entrepreneurship education from the master's degree program director and on ecosystem research from the founder of their SJK Entrepreneurship Center. All in all, such productive and insightful days with lots of laughter.
