In this post we present Mysticons and Pengwin Media's summer work at WIMMA Lab!

Mysticons: Broseidon is Mysticons’ hosting environment consisting of 8 Kubernetes clusters. There are open-source SOC, production, and staging clusters and 3 general-purpose testing clusters. The entire network is connectable through a single HA-Proxy cluster. We are using mostly Mk8s, but cluster dedicated for Palo Alto Networks is running full K8s.

We have also automated DevOps pipeline starting from building the container and modifying the manifests required for deployment. Argo CD pulls them from GitLab, and Testkube runs automated testing on new containers. Argo CD also deploys developer specific configurations such as namespaces and resource quotas.

Our open-source SOC consists of Wazuh with custom ruleset integrated with Falco eBPF. Mysticons also installed MISP which Wazuh can utilize for threat intelligence. We use Shuffle for automatic notification whenever a new application has been deployed or Testkube has completed automated tests. We have also set up alerting in Wazuh and Palo Alto Prisma Cloud for our chosen SIEM incidents. Alerts are forwarded to Discord, Slack and/or Teams with relevant personnel tagged.

Pengwin: This summer Pengwin Media has developed the Career Scouter tool using Vue.js. It is designed for JAMK students to explore their desired field of specialization. It offers information on courses and real worker insights into various fields. Additionally, the tool includes a survey to gather students' interests in the specialization. This data, visualized using Power BI, helps JAMK staff analyze student demands and track changes in career preferences, leading to improvements in study programs. The development will be continued by the next year WIMMA Lab students group.

We also made this year's Open Doors website. The OpenDoors website was built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, providing the foundation for the site. HTML structured the content, CSS styled the layout, and JavaScript added interactive elements. It featured a Microsoft Form for easy event registration and integrated Google Maps for location information. The website was designed to be responsive, ensuring a seamless user experience across different devices.

Today and tomorrow, we will showcase the work done by the teams during the summer on our social media channels. Today we will showcase the work of the IoTitude and Overflow teams!

IoTitude:
This summer IoTitude created Tukko - Traffic Visualizer, an assigment given by Combitech Finland. Tukko utilizes data from digitraffic API, and improves upon it by unifying the scattered info across multiple endpoints into our own much simpler API. We also gather data long term, which can later be shown to users to check for recent anomalies.

This data is then shown in a React based user interface, with mapping tools by Leaflet utilizing multiple plugins such as Geoman and Cluster markers.
Utilizing custom icons, popups and tooltips, Tukko strives to convey information intuitively. For the more interested users, more in depth information is available. Development for Tukko followed best practices by utilizing a very strict ruleset maintained by Typescript and ESLint. Tukko is a complete product, but our team had many ideas left unfulfilled due to time constraints.

Overflow:
In 2.5 months, Overflow has made remarkable progress! Skill Collector now collects comprehensive skill survey data, fostering collaboration between companies and educational institutions. Our user-centric design, seamless integrations with SKILL-db and answer database, and personalized email invitations make data collection efficient. Multi-language support ensures inclusivity. With Power BI integration, data analysis becomes more powerful. GDPR compliance and transparency ensure data security. User feedback drives continuous improvement. Stay tuned for more updates in the future!

We've successfully built a robust mock-up for Viksu, complete with a powerful backend and preliminary frontend. Our team dived deep into the old software, conducted thorough investigations, and documented comprehensive requirements. We hope that the following developers will be able to continue our work, that build a solid foundation for Viksu's future.

Jukka Hämäläinen visited our office last week, 12 July. Jukka is the founder of Giju Ltd and he shared his invaluable insights on "7 Behaviors of Building an Autonomous Team Mentality". The presentation was engaging and we had a fascinating discussion on the topic. We explored each of the seven points together and Jukka gave excellent examples of each of them.

In our discussion we went through, for example, these topics:
- Encouraging curiosity and thirst for knowledge in the team. Jukka highlighted the importance of fostering an environment where questions are welcomed and valued.
-Recognise and openly discuss the limitations and challenges that the team may face. This openness enables effective problem solving and collaboration.
-Recognise and empower each team member to take on leadership roles as needed. Jukka encouraged us to foster a culture where leadership opportunities are available to all.

Thanks to Jukka for his visit and for an interesting and engaging discussion on this topic. We are inspired to apply these behaviors in our daily work and to promote teamwork. Thank you, Jukka, for sharing your expertise with us!

On Wednesday evening 5 July, team members headed to nature for an Afterlab organized by Liikkuva aikuinen/Adults on the Move program. This summer, Adults on the Move is working with the team to design and implement the VIKSU 2.0 service for them.

Guided by Tanja Onatsu and Reetta Laakkonen from the Adults on the Move program, team members headed to the Kangasvuori nature trail for a short walk and then to the Vuorilampi pond for a relaxed campfire. At first the rain threatened to disrupt the nature hike, but then the weather improved and it became sunny.

Thanks Adults on the Move for Wednesday's nature trip, and for getting us away from our computers and desks for a while!

Welcome to Mysticons second round. This time we are presenting a very high-level overview of our work in progress deployments and what’s going on.

In the video we will quickly glance at our open source SIEM which is Wazuh. The entire Wazuh stack consists of MISP for threat intelligence, Kibanas plugin integration, Falco eBPF’s logs for Wazuh and Shuffle for automated Discord alerts that will be sent to administrators in case of high-level alert.
Then we will move on to Argo CD that we will use for automating deployment and rollbacks from GitLab. Our one source of truth pull architecture scans for any changes in GitLab and updates the image in our cluster. It will also make sure no drifting occurs in configuration.

After Argo we will look at the Palo Alto Networks Prisma Cloud which is designed to be all-in-one solution when it comes to securing up the entire environment. So far, we have found Prisma Cloud to be incredibly comprehensive and intuitive to use. Showcasing Prisma Cloud would take several hours but we hope this short overview gives the general feeling about the platform.

At the end we will have a look at the Testkube environment which we will use to automate testing. for any container Argo CD pulls into the staging server.

Our documentation recently got an update in case you’re finding this interesting! https://lnkd.in/df5X6qpA

All teams continue to work on developing their assigned projects or configuring tools until the “Kaunailta” 28.7. After that we have an entire week dedicated to documenting what has been done. This part of our documentation will be more technical and will be prepared for Mysticons 2024 and general public.

Riku Juurikko, Elisa 's Head of Preparedness & Cyber Resilience, as our guest speaker on Tuesday, July 4th. He delivered an insightful talk on the intriguing subject of social engineering.

For those who are not familiar, social engineering is a fascinating concept that revolves around influencing or manipulating humans through psychosocial means. It's important to note that social engineering is not always negative, as it can be used for positive outcomes as well.

One of the key takeaways from the discussion was understanding the goals behind social engineering. By leveraging psychological and social tactics, attackers aim to exploit human vulnerabilities and trick individuals into divulging confidential data, granting unauthorized access, or performing actions that can compromise security.

After the presentation, team members, Riku Juurikko and Sergey Martikainen went to spend some time at our AfterLabs for bowling and a lovely dinner. A big thank you to Riku Juurikko for sharing his expertise with the WIMMA Lab team, and thanks also for the fun leisure time with you and Sergey.
