Pykrete Dome

Pykrete Dome The goal of the ‘Pykrete dome’ project is to build the largest ice dome in the world by using Pykrete. www.pykretedome.com Arno Pronk.

Ice is an uncommon but challenging building material. The ice dome should have an internal diameter of 30 meters. This will make it 20 meter bigger than the current official [Guinness book] largest ice dome in the world. To make this size possible, the dome will be partly constructed with fiber-reinforced ice, or so-called Pykrete. This sustainable innovation has never been used in an ice building before. The ice dome will be built in December 2013 and is developed by students of the Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. The project is already partially funded. However, those who want to contribute to this project are invited to contact us. The ‘Pykrete Dome’ project is started in September 2012 by two graduation students and their tutor ir. Their research on the use of fiber-reinforced ice in an ice structure lead to the ambition to realize a world record ice shell. In February 2012, the Eindhoven University of Technology decided to start a commission for the realization of project ‘Pykrete dome’. The current commission consists of four students and two professors who will design the ice shell aiming to realize the design at the end of 2013. The commission is focusing on research, realization, organization, sponsoring, media, and promotion. This website provides more information on the ice dome project.

This winter we are going to do a new ice project in China!

Like our new Facebookpage so we can keep you up-to-date:

We build with Ice! Our new project will be a tower of 30 meters in China!

By adding fibres to the ice we are able to build ice structures. Such as the Pykrete dome, the Sagrada in Ice and the Bridge in Ice.

Structural Ice is a five year old organisation from the TU/e Eindhoven (The Netherlands). We’re in collaboration with different educational institutions on an international level.
In 2010 we started a research in the course of use and appliance with solid ice. Through different kind of solid ice sculptures,

In 2015 a new record and innovative ice building will be created in Juuka, Finland. Tu/e students designed a scale model of the famous basilica 'Sagrada Familia' constructed with the material [reinforced] ice. It will be the highest ice dome which has ever been built. For more information about this project 'like'' their facebook [Sagrada Familia in Ice] or check the website [www.structuralice.com].
