"You can grow even in difficult places. You can bend in the wind – and still remain strong.” The students of Joensuu Steiner School planted a Juniperus communis ‘Sisu’ juniper to cherish peace and protect the school garden currently under construction, but also to remind us of the importance of hope and resilience along our learning journey. Four first-grade pupils from the school helped with planting the juniper. In addition to planting the tree, the whole school reflected on the meaning of peace through the idea on a peace tree.

Both the Steiner School’s schoolgarden and this event align well with the UN goals, which recognise the close connection between the state of the environment and peace in societies.

The event was part of ENO Schoolnet’s international tree-planting event “Let's Plant Trees and Grow Hope”, held annually on 21 September. This year’s event was organised together with the Finnish Forest Centre and the University of Eastern Finland as part of the Eco2Adapt -project.

ENO invites schools, communities and other stakeholders to participate in ENO Tree Planting Days! Climate change is one of the most urgent and biggest problems. We all have to do our part to reduce the effect of climate change. A good way to tie carbon is to plant trees and forests!
