Foraging…boiling…waiting…that’s the basic way to make wild ink. It takes time and patience and that’s what a soul sometimes needs—a moment to slow down and dip into a quieter way of doing things.
Our wild ink workshop by Lake Tuusula over the weekend led us through all the steps of ink making, starting with foraging for alder cones to the song of a nearby cuckoo bird. Inside the lakeside cottage, we got our trusty old pots and started the simmering process and as it started to rain outside, it was time to gather around the table to get to know the world of natural inks first hand.
What a joy it is to introduce color made from the earth to others and see how each individual collaborates with nature’s inks in their own way.

Art in the Park with a group of wild and free ones at the ULOS-UT-OUT outdoor education conference 2026 ULOS-UT-OUT 💚
This yearly gathering brings likeminded, nature-loving folks from around the world and it was great fun to host my Wild Inks workshop as part of this year’s program. My workshop was a full house and then some!
Together we went over the basic process of making ink from foraged plant materials, and examples of how participants could bring this knowledge to others, including children.
I brought over my pots of simmered horsetail and lupine, and filtered them at the park to add to the collection of inks—alder cone, acorn cap, and birch leaf.
Part of the magic of wild inks is how their colors can be altered with just a few drops of modifiers like rust water and alum. I have to say my heart was full in hearing the oohs and ahhhs as folks saw the alchemy in action!
What a joy to see everyone playing and experimenting and painting with inks💚 Thank you all for coming in large numbers and for the conference staff for picking a lovely spot in the park to have our gathering.
Ice cream days are here!🍦☀️Summer art camp is in full swing and today was our craftiest day yet. All the fun bits and bobs that are found at Seed Art Studio headquarters came along to our pop-up studio today for a morning of painting, sticking, designing and building the cutest ice cream shops of our dreams!
While parents enjoy good coffee, have lunch, shop or just chill downstairs at the fabulous , little artists and architects are busy upstairs making, tinkering and imagining.
A perfect couple of hours if you ask me💓

New Workshop for Adults!
Join me by the shores of Lake Tuusula along the idyllic stretch of Rantatie this June.
Learn how to forage and extract color from native plants to make sustainable, eco-friendly ink for painting and writing!
This hands-on workshop is an introduction to the basics of ink making from plant materials found in our neighborhoods and nearby forests. We will get to know and work with the alder tree, which grows along the shores of Lake Tuusula. Each participant will make their own creative piece and take home a small bottle of handmade ink.
We meet as a small group in the cozy Ruotsin Maja at the Lotta Museum for an immersive and experimental creative experience. This workshop is intended for adults or youths who attend with an adult.
