More and more information about the effects of inbreeding on longevity and morbidity is accumulating every year.

A recent study comparing the lifespans of purebred, multi-breed and cross-bred dogs showed once again that diversity brings vitality: Multi-breeds lived the longest and crossbreeds the second longest.

A popular suggestion to cure inbreeding and health problems is to stop breeding.

Abandoning separate breeds is another commonly suggested remedy. If all breeds were bred together, freely crossed, the gene pool would be as large as all breeds combined and the situation would improve for good.

Would that really be the case?
Would these methods be feasible in practice? Would they work?

Helle Friis Proschowsky, from the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Copenhagen University, has just published a Horizon Topic paper with Maja Arendt, Brenda Bonnett, Camilla Bruun, Irena Czycholl, Merete Fredholm, Dan O’Neill, James Serpell, and Peter Sandøe. The title of the paper is ”A new future for dog breeding”.

The paper presents a review of modern dog breeding, outlining the current situation and suggesting improvements to enhance the health and welfare of dogs in the future. The authors view this paper as a call to action, providing a framework for driving meaningful change.

Closed populations and the pursuit of exaggerated traits predispose dog breeds to health and behavioural problems.

What should be done in this situation to ensure that pedigree dog breeding can continue in the future and that the reputation of pedigree dogs is enhanced? Some countries have gone the way of breed bans, but in Finland the solutions are different.

The Finnish Kennel Club’s (FKC) webinar on 21 November 2024 explored what these solutions might mean in practice.

Oh, how happy I am to read this Swedish Vallhund breeding programme! 🤗🤗

FINALLY a breed club that is working on an international database to calculate mean kinship (MK) values for dogs!

MK is an absolutely super tool for maintaining genetic diversity in a population. I have been talking about MKs for 20 years now.

MK is a measure of genetic relatedness in a breed. It tells you what the average inbreeding coefficient will be in the next generation. MK is calculated for each individual dog, and the dogs with the lowest MKs are the least related to the other dogs in the breed. They are therefore valuable in breeding if the aim is to maintain genetic diversity in the breed. Of course, they should also have good health and mentality.

Now just waiting for news on the database!
