Pre-show rituals are important for calming the mind and they can be super effective at minimising stage fear. For me, it's putting on my makeup before a show. By the time I'm finished, I'm calm and ready to perform. That's what a ritual does. The same steps in the same order, so the body learns what comes next.
Most of us prepare the notes for months, but leave the last hour before we walk on to chance. We warm up the instrument and forget about preparing ourselves. And part of preparing is knowing how stage fear and nerves might hit before you walk on stage.
Not all stage fear is the same, and knowing how yours shows up is important. I made a free 2-minute quiz to you figure it out.

There have been long stretches in my life when I didn't ask myself why I play at all. Every time, I ended up losing my motivation and the joy of playing. Music became a necessity, something I did because it was expected of me.

Many of us play because we're used to playing. Because our parents wanted it, or our friends encouraged us. That's how most of us start. But the reasons you had as a teenager aren't the reasons you have as a professional making a living from it. Your 'why' changes as you change. The danger is when you stop asking.
So ask. Find a quiet corner, a pen and a piece of paper, and give it 5 minutes. Don't just think about it. Write it down.

1. When did you last ask yourself why you play? Write what comes up, the emotions as much as the reasons.
2. List 3 moments when you felt most alive with your music.
3. Finish this sentence in your own words. "I play because..."

Keep the page. Next month, answer the same questions again without looking at it, then compare. The reasons that stay are the ones to steer by.

"Why do I play?" is the first question in my course, and it's the one I keep coming back to.
Save this for the days the motivation isn't there.

My father loved Mozart. As a kid, I didn't. Then around 13 I heard Shostakovich and Metallica, and nothing was the same again. What was the first music that really moved you? Tell me what piece changed everything for you in the comments.

When inspiration isn’t there… do it anyway.
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the work – it’s getting started.
You set up everything, get the gear ready, the space is right… and still, nothing flows.
That was me recently on tour. I spent days preparing to record something for a friend, and when I finally got everything ready: no spark.
But here’s what I’ve learned:
Even when it doesn’t “take off,” it’s still progress.
I gave feedback, created something, and moved one step closer to completion.

Action beats waiting for perfect conditions.

Give yourself five minutes to start.
Often, that’s all it takes to find your rhythm again.

There were years when nothing about the show was wrong, but I still wanted to be anywhere but there on the stage. What changed it wasn't a bigger stage. It was remembering why I was there – to serve my audience, not myself. Would this reframe work for you?

I used to think the finished thing was the point. Every album taught me otherwise. The best part had already happened by the time it was done. Goals help us move in the right direction, but joy and fulfilment happen on the journey – not at the end.

I talk a lot about goals in my course. How to pick the ones that make sense for you, how to build SMART ones, and how to create a plan to reach those goals – all while staying flexible to enjoy what the journey brings. Comment COURSE to learn more.

A 30-second reset for when your mind won't slow down.

Racing thoughts, stress building, nerves before something that matters. This is one of the quickest ways back into your body.

It's called the physiological sigh.

1. Breathe in deeply through your nose
2. Take one more short sip of air on top, to fill your lungs completely
3. Let it all out slowly through your mouth

Repeat two or three times and notice what changes. If you feel lightheaded, slow it down.

The breath is one of the simplest tools we have, and it runs all through my course, Mindset Mastery for Musicians — from calming stage fear to starting a practice session with real focus. If you'd like to go deeper, comment COURSE and I'll send you the link.

I don't get nervous on stage with Apocalyptica anymore. Put me in a corridor before my first lecture and it's a different story. Stage fear isn't a flaw. It's what an unfamiliar situation feels like. Comment STAGE and I’ll send you my free quiz so you can start working on your stage fear.

MY #1 RULE FOR A BETTER DAY ☀️
Do you find it hard to change habits or start new routines?
For me, everything shifted when I understood one simple thing:
How I start my morning defines how the rest of my day unfolds.
My number one rule:
📵 No phone in the morning.
No social media, no messages, no emails, no news.
Before letting the world in, I first check in with myself:

– How do I feel today?
– How do I want to feel today?
– Who do I want to be today?

That few quiet minutes can completely reset your mindset.

Try it tomorrow and check back in. Have you tried it? Let me know in the comments.

Everything in this course builds toward one thing: the artist already in you. I found mine by accident, playing the “wrong” music on the “wrong” instrument. Yours is waiting too. Mindset Mastery for Musicians is live - link in bio, or comment COURSE and I'll send it to you.
