A competition to redesign one of Helsinki’s most visited places for the centennial year of Finnish independence. Competition launches in December 2015.
A student competition, organized by Aalto University, the City of Helsinki and the Office of Bruce Oreck for finding new concepts for the Market Square through the design of market stall prototypes. The competition will result in built models and an exhibition on the Kauppatori Square. Kauppatori is one of the most visited places in Finland: During this summer we spent more than 2500 man-hours on the square learning about the opportunities and challenges of what this means in practice. We learned about the complex structure of Kauppatori's stakeholders; the vendors, the customer base, the visitors and the infrastructure providers. We learned about the hard physical work it takes every day to earn your bread and the reasons why people have chosen to do this for a living. We have collected tons of feedback, opinions, analytics and data about the everyday of Kauppatori, as well as memories, stories, moments and friends. We wish to share all of this with you - we don’t quite know yet how - but boy we do have ideas! Help us continue our project by nominating us and help Kauppatori to stay on the top10 market squares in the world!
