EdTech Has to Work for Both Learners and Companies | Marjo Kenttälä

Educational innovation has two very different goals to satisfy.

Companies need to grow and scale.

Schools need solutions that help learners learn better and teachers teach better.

In this short clip, Marjo Kenttälä explains why EdTech Testbed Helsinki has to connect those two perspectives rather than treat them separately.

The goal is not only to support companies, or only to support schools.

It is to build processes that can do both.

How can a city actually help better EdTech get developed?

In this short clip, Marjo Kenttälä explains the two models used by EdTech Testbed Helsinki.

One starts with the needs of schools and educators: when teachers or the Education Division identify something missing from the market, companies can be invited to co-develop a new solution with them.

The other starts with the company: when an EdTech team needs to test and develop its product, the Testbed helps connect it with real learners and educational environments.

Two different starting points, but the same principle:

develop with the users, not only for them.

Research already has value on its own. Filing an invention disclosure is how the university helps turn research findings into real-world impact. We want to spotlight some of the disclosures coming out of the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Educational Sciences and celebrate the researchers behind them 🎓

🎉 Today we're spotlighting a fresh one!

👋 Meet Felix Leminen, Ecosystem Development Lead at Helsinki Education Hub which operates under the Faculty of Educational Sciences. Felix works on finding innovation ideas within research groups and helping them move forward.

🔍 You don't have to be a researcher to file an invention disclosure. Good ideas can come from anyone working close to the research, and the university reviews every disclosure the same way.

🙌 The invention itself stays under wraps for now, while the university and the inventors work together to assess its real-world potential. Filing a disclosure takes real initiative, and it's worth celebrating.

Where are they now? We're catching up with alumni from our incubator to see how life looks today. 👀

🌱 First up: Vegemi. Vegemi is a Finnish EdTech company that teaches children about the microbiome, health and nutrition. HundrED named it one of the world's 100 most impactful education innovations in its Global Collection 2026. With its little microbiome hero and free app, Vegemi brings playful learning into schools, homes, healthcare, restaurants and stores.

We asked them two quick questions.

💡 How's it going right now?

Vegemi is making an impact across many sectors in Finland. Together with the Espoon kaupunki - Esbo stad - City of Espoo, they co-developed the Vegemi Method for early childhood education. Vegemi also runs public health projects on children's oral health and nutrition.

Their collaboration with the restaurant chain Picnic brings learning into everyday life. In just five months, Picnic sold over 55,000 Vegemi kids' meals. That's 11 metric tons of fruit and vegetables for children across Finland!

Internationally, Vegemi is advancing in the UK, GCC and Kenya. Stay tuned for exciting news soon!

We’re kicking off a new series where we ask EdTech professionals one question: What should EdTech be in the future?🎙️

🧠 First up: Dr. Iida Pyy, Head of AI for Education at Ilkka Paananen Foundation and Illusian. She’s currently leading work on what role AI should play in Finnish K-12 education.

💭 Her take: ”Like it or not, we’ve entered the AI era, and it’s changing how we know, work, and live together. A big edtech fail would be just to do the old stuff a little bit faster.”

✨ What excites her most? AI that gives every learner real, personalized support, finally good enough and affordable enough to reach everyone.

⚠️ Her warning: ”Efficiency ≠ learning. The EdTech that matters should help us reimagine what learning looks like in the future.”
