Emotion School Finland story

The story of ESF (Emotion School Finland) started from the observations made by Finnish Family Counsellor Carita Viklund. While meeting children and families in her clinic, encountering various behaviourally challenged situations in the classrooms and after receiving large number of worried messages from teachers and parents about “emotionally chaotic” behaviours- it was time to tackle the problem more widely.

The parents and teachers said “ how do I teach something I have never learned myself? How do I talk about emotions?”

By realizing this need and the hunger for understanding, Carita developed and founded SEL (social-emotional learning)-program for children. She also started to offer SEL-centered counselling and workshops for parents. Besides her clinical work she has worked closely with teachers and early childhood educators, providing them with further resources for their pedagogical practice and collegial work.

Carita has witnessed along the way that parents and teachers who have better understanding of their own emotions, reactions and projections are able to regulate themselves more skillfully and guide the children further. Many adults have not had emotionally skilled upbringing and it is impossible to take the child further than your own skillset allows.

Carita has reached large number of parents and professionals across the globe. She currently offers guidance and counselling online. This way everyone has the opportunity to further develop their SEL-skills in private guidance sessions. She also travels around the world to give talks and workshops on SEL-skills.

Carita believes, that SEL-skills are the foundation of emotional wellbeing. They are a crucial corner stone for balanced life. By learning social-emotional skills, we develop stronger self and social awareness, we are able to recognize and regulate our emotions and we are able to identify and clearly communicate our needs to others.

SEL- awareness helps us to create deeper and more compassionate connection with ourselves. We are also able to develop meaningful and functional relationships with other people in our lives. We learn to practice compassion and empathy by understanding the needs of others too.

According to various research, teaching and learning SEL-skills can have various benefits. Improved social interaction, decrease in emotional stress (such as anxiety), increased level of self-care through self-awareness, less disruptive behaviour in children, increased levels of empathy and will to work towards positive goals.

The younger we learn these skills the better. However, in many cases we start to look at our emotional package only later on in life, in adult years. Carita gives strong encouragement for everyone to start exploring one´s emotions and underlying needs. This way we can break the pattern of “hiding our emotions and acting out from our reactions” and teach our children to have holistic knowledge of themselves and others.
