Taidekoulu Maa kouluttaa Suomenlinnassa nykytaiteilijoita ammattiin ja järjestää avoimia iltakursseja / Alternative art education since 1986

Taidekoulu MAAssa voi opiskella kolmivuotisella nykytaiteilijan ammattiin valmentavalla päivälinjalla sekä avoimilla iltakursseilla. Opiskelijoita koulussa on vuosittain päivä- ja iltalinjalla yhteensä noin 90. Kaikki yli 18-vuotiaat voivat pyrkiä kolmivuotiselle nykytaiteilijan ammattiin valmentavalle päivälinjalle valintakokeen kautta. Iltakursseille voivat osallistua kaikki yli 15-vuotiaat kuvataiteesta kiinnostuneet, oppilaitoksiin pyrkivät ja vasta-alkajat.

Join Myriam Diatta for a reading and conversation on her new book, Doing Creative Work from Your Political Body: A Guide and Process for Practice-led Research, published with Set Margins’. The event will be dedicated to the daily work that politically engaged designers, writers, performers, visual artists, musicians, educators, researchers, and cultural workers do.

While the academies, cultural institutions, and universities around us tend to separate practice and theory, we will invite you to reflect: What do you make and where? What socio-political realities do you engage with? And, at the heart of the exploration, how might you nurture the making, being, thinking, and reading you do—all at once?

Myriam D. Diatta is a designer and independent scholar. Her practice focuses on the interior at the intersection of politically engaged work and creative knowledge production. Myriam is Black-Asian, Japanese-Diola, with a political and creative foundation nurtured in New York City. She is currently based in Aarhus, Denmark.

Catalysti x Taidekoulu MAA collaboration is an online Thursday Lecture Series inviting transcultural artists, curators, and cultural professionals based in Finland or elsewhere in the world to talk about their research and practice in an open and free to all discussion.

The lectures offer audiences a direct contact with cultural professionals, artists, and curators whose work challenges the status quo in contemporary art and society.

This fall the Thursday Lecture Series explores the role of contemporary art and the work of the artist in society as situated within the current ecosocial and sociopolitical context we live in. The main question of the series is: What is at Stake? with an emphasis on borders (physical, conceptual, legal), displacement, site-sensitivity and history, migration, memory, emotional landscapes, political body, rituals, food politics and cultural heritage through the lecturers’ gazes.

The lectures are held on Thursdays from 10.00 to 11.30am online on the Zoom platform.

Registration for Sound Workshop is open until the 7th of September!

The Workshop is taught by sound designer Alina Ostrogradskaya.

During the sessions, we will learn the technical basics of sound production, such as recording, mixing, digital audio workstations, and live performance. We will approach sound through practical exercises and experiments; and work individually and collaboratively. We will also briefly touch on the history of sound studies and contemporary discourse.

The Workshop will run almost every Thursday, starting on 17th of September.

Registrations for Paria Mohajeraanii course “Performing toolbox: Performance art and ‘Others’” are now open on PAP’s website!

This course is for those who want to play, experiment, and discuss a question in performance art: How to make a work collectively?
A performance art event can never be owned by an individual. The product of a performance event is an experience that emerges through the interaction of facilitators, audience, lights, colors, sounds and histories, and even the ancestors and artistic lineages we call upon according to our needs.

The course is divided into two parts of activity:

1. Discussion and Reflection
We will look at important works of art and engage with selected theoretical texts. Through reading and discussion, we will explore different ways of working together, participating, and creating collectively.
2. Practice and Experimentation
We will do a variety of exercises, both individually and together. Through collective practices and experiments, we will explore different ways of sharing work with audiences and learn about the many elements that shape a performance.

A public or private or in-between final showing is possible and up to negotiate within the class.

This course requires no previous professional experience in performance art. All it asks for is a curious, playful mindset and we won’t let anyone take that away from us.

By the end of the course you will be equipped with theoretical knowledge on a wide range of artistic practices in performing arts, and will have practical ways of incorporating them into your own work.
