The European Commission is proposing an extraordinary Kids Act to protect the mental health of future generations by banning social media for children under 13 years old.! Young children should spend their childhoods developing their social skills playing with each other in real life (not online), wander through nature, climb tress, play hide/seek, engage with each other to develop their social and communication skills. During the past few years we can very often see children walking through a park being completely immersed in their phones and totally out of touch with the surrounding environment (and themselves).
In Montessori we deliberately avoid the use of digital devices offering children an opportunity to use their hands and senses in exploration - playing with natural materials, engaging in problem solving in real life situations - the vast majority of the brain function is formed before the age of 7! That's why quality early childhood experiences are so important for overall future mental and physical health. It's like a foundation of a building - if it's sound the building will be able to withstand severe natural forces (or life circumstances)
