Happy Anniversary International Olympic Academy and The Olympic Studies Centre!
On this day (16th of June) we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the International Olympic Academy, which opened its doors to the youth of the world in the symbolic place of ancient Olympia.
When Pierre de Coubertin founded the IOC and the Olympic Movement, he created a movement whose ideals and values were to be studied, safeguarded and disseminated. It was his vision and his wish for a permanent school of Olympism to be created.
Coubertin said, shortly before his death: « I have not been able to carry out to the end what I wanted to perfect.(…) I think that a centre of Olympic studies would aid the preservation and progress of my work more than anything else and would keep it from the false paths which I fear. »
In these 60 years, the IOA has successfully fulfilled this mission and made a tremendous contribution to the Olympic Movement, acting as its educational pillar and allowing thousands of students, teachers, scientists, athletes and administrators to experience, understand and learn about Olympism and Olympic values.
We, The IOC Olympic Studies Centre, congratulate the IOA on this special anniversary and look forward to further intensifying our collaboration for the mutual objective to strengthen Olympic Education and Studies.
