”When I’m on Stage, I Rule.” - Cholita music and fashion in a changing Bolivia

You are warmly welcome to learn more about Bolivian cholita music and fashion on Wednesday, November 13th from 14:00 to 16:00 p.m, at room 344, Unioninkatu 35, second floor!

We have the pleasure of the company of Bolivian cholita artist, fashion entrepreneur and student of Political science Verónica Torrico on this event. Verónica founded the song and dance group Las Florecitas de Mizque together with her sisters Roxana and Noelia in 2009. The group formed part of a cultural phenomenon that involved hundreds of song and dance groups created by young Quechua-speaking women known as cholitas. When the dance venues were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Torrico sisters created a cholita fashion line based on their performance outfits. Today, their artisanal clothes workshop has grown into several fashion stores.

During this event, Verónica Torrico will talk and show videos about the Torrico sisters' experience in cholita music and fashion, with a short presentation by Siboné Oroza with a focus on women from Indigenous backgrounds making space for themselves in Bolivian music industry. There will also be time for questions and answers. The languages of the event will be Quechua, Spanish, and English.

This session is organised in collaboration with the World Wide Women Female Musicians Crossing Borders and Building Futures (2021–2024), funded by Kone Foundation. Siboné Oroza’s doctoral thesis on cholita music is available at Helda, the open-access digital repository of the University of Helsinki https://helda.helsinki.fi/items/e22ffccd-1fe1-475c-a1c2-ad725a7921c2."

Discussion on Climate Debt and Climate Justice

Thursday 11.4.2024 at 16:00–18:00
Language Center, Room 115
Fabianinkatu 26, Helsinki

You are cordially invited to engage in our seminar discussion related to the topical issues of climate debt and climate justice. The event will be co-hosted by the discipline of Global Development Studies and the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki.

We are collaborating with Debt for Climate Finland for this occasion. It is part of the Global South-led Debt for Climate movement, advocating for climate justice through debt cancellation. Their work is founded on the principle that the substantial debts imposed by Western financial institutions on countries in the Global South hinder their ability to adapt to the impacts of the ecological crisis and ties them to fossil fuel production and extractivism.

Our program includes a Q & A session featuring guest speakers from Debt for Climate chapters in Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia.

We will also benefit from the expertise of our invited commentators, Professor Barry K. Gills and Dr. Ossi I. Ollinaho from Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki.

Program

16.00–16.05 Opening remarks by Dr. Tiina Seppälä, Global Development Studies, UH

16.05–16.35 Presentation: “Why debt cancellation is climate justice?” Debt for Climate Finland

16.35–17.10 Q & A session with Coordinator Dianey M. from Debt for Climate Kenya, alongside Coordinators from Ghana and Zambia

17.10–17.20 Commentary by Professor Barry K. Gills, Global Development Studies, UH

17.20–17.30 Commentary by Dr. Ossi I. Ollinaho, Global Development Studies, UH

17.30–18.00 Open discussion
