The Legal Tech Lab is happy to join with PI Alina Wernick, Riikka Koulu, and the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) on a new, Kone Foundation funded research project on smart city technology. The project focuses on the long-term risks of smart city technology, as well as the protection of lawfulness and legitimacy in the usage of smart city innovations.
Technology in smart cities can be used both for the benefit of the citizens, but also to limit human rights, competition and democracy. While there is an active field of technological smart city innovations in Finland, long-term risks of smart city technology, such as surveillance and discrimination, have not been studied comprehensively from socio-legal perspective. This project delves into the legal and ethical problems involved in the smart city technology, as well as possible solutions to them.
Congratulations to the whole research team!

Dear friends, colleagues and new acquaintances - students, researchers and friends of academia alike,
Algorithms control an increasing amount of decision-making in today's computerized world. Against growing evidence on algorithms reproducing inequality, is transparency really the answer - or just hype? As to societal consequences of algorithmic predictions: what is the potential and what are the limitations of transparency in overcoming their systemic biases? These are some of the questions the newly starting Academy of Finland funded research project called Potential and Boundaries of Algorithmic Transparency (AlgoT) will be looking into.
Welcome to join the conversation, at the research project's kickoff event at Tiedekulma (Yliopistonkatu 4), more precisely Think Lounge (2nd floor)!
Programme 7 October:
5pm - Welcome pizza(aaaahhh!)
5.15pm - Background and introduction to the AlgoT project by directors of the project: Ida Koivisto (Assistant Professor of Administrative Law) and Riikka Koulu (Assistant Professor of Law and Digitalization)
5.30pm - What is wrong with AlgoT? Conversation with Eero Hyvönen (Director of Helsinki Centre for Digital Humanities (HELDIG) at the University of Helsinki and professor of semantic media technology at the Aalto University, Department of Computer Science) and Jussi Mäkinen (Head of Digital Regulation, Growth and Education, Technology Industries of Finland)
6-6.30pm - Open discussion
The event is open to all, free of charge, but requires registration as pizza will be served. Please register by 6 October through here: https://elomake.helsinki.fi/lomakkeet/100146/lomake.html

Something to cheer up the Friday afternoon: here's an AI tool that completes any sentence you begin to type in and tells a whole story about it! Is this how reports, news and seminar papers are written in a couple of years?
