October at Carousel 🍂

A month of autumn discoveries, shared celebrations and time together. Here are the dates for your calendar:

🍎 Friday 9 October — Harvest Celebration
🍂 12–16 October — Preschool Autumn Holiday
🎃 Friday 30 October — Children’s Halloween Party during the day at Olari and Ruoholahti
✨ Friday 30 October — Family Halloween Party in the evening at Ruoholahti, for Carousel families from both nurseries

We’re looking forward to sharing these moments with our Carousel community. 💛

Who made today’s snack? 🍎

The Owls did.
Before sitting down to eat, our Owls prepared fruit and vegetables, brought their snack together and served themselves.
One slice at a time, there was concentration, practice and a chance to contribute. Everyday jobs become opportunities to make choices and take part in the life of the group.
A snack made together at Carousel, Ruoholahti, Helsinki. 🌿

We planted seeds. One child imagined a watering robot. 🌱
Our Ruoholahti Owls planted edamame beans, dwarf peas and regular peas. Then they drew the experience and told us about their pictures.
Some remembered putting seeds into the soil. Others noticed the watering, or the days we would need to wait. One imagined a greenhouse with a robot to do the watering.
The drawings help us see what each child noticed, remembered and imagined. A shared experience, seen in different ways.
Now our seeds are in the indoor garden under LED lights, and we wait.

We made it rain leaves. 🍂
First, we collected them. Then came the paint, the pressing and the patterns.
And, of course, the leaf shower.
Our Seals in Ruoholahti have been exploring autumn with their hands, their feet and plenty of curiosity, noticing colours, feeling textures and discovering what leaves can become.
From the pavement to the painting table, with time to play along the way.

From Market to Baking! 🧺🧁

We went to the market together and bought fresh plums. First, the children tasted and explored them—and they loved them! Then our little food adventure continued as we turned our plums into something delicious through baking. Mixing, tasting, creating and learning together! 💜

What did they spot? 🌿
On a rainy visit to Villa Elfvik, our Olari preschoolers slowed down to examine tree bark, moss and small finds on the forest floor.

They used their hands and observation tools, returning to details that caught their attention. The walk gave them time to notice, wonder and share what they discovered.

Jump—or step across? 🌿

On Monday in Seurasaari, our Ruoholahti Owls explored the forest paths one small challenge at a time.

Logs to jump across. Roots to step over. Friends to walk alongside.

Time to look, choose a way through and have a go—before setting off together again.

🎾🔺 Shape Adventure!
Our little explorers searched for shapes indoors and outdoors, matching and recognizing the same shapes in different places. Through this playful adventure, children developed shape recognition, observation, matching and problem-solving skills.

A den for Oiva? 🦉🌿
On our rainy visit to Villa Elfvik, our Olari preschoolers explored forest shelters, gathered natural materials and brought Oiva, our pre-school owl, into their play.
From a shelter the children could step inside to a tiny den among the moss and branches, the forest became a place for stories and imagination.
A familiar friend like Oiva gives children someone to include in their ideas, and a reason to explain, create and care. These everyday moments make space for language, cooperation and thinking about what someone else might need.

🥁🎶 Music & Sound Adventure!
We placed rice on top of a drum and played different sounds and songs. The children watched with excitement as the rice moved, bounced and stopped with the vibrations.

🔬 A simple science experience exploring sound, vibration, movement and cause & effect through music!
