Learn Finnish by my way

Hi sweet friend!

I’m so sorry to say this, I came to say goodbye. This is my last post. Thank you for being with me on my journey and all your sweet messages which encouraged me continue this page until now. As you follow this page, you probably know I’ve spent my spare time to share with you my knowledge about learning Finnish, I have no goals for this page and I don’t want to be a Finnish teacher in the future. Now I need time for what more important for me, so I’m gonna quit this. I need to tell you that because there are more other pages which are better to follow and learn Finnish. Everything that I’ve posted here will be here forever and on FB page, because I think it’s gonna useful for new Finnish beginners anyway.

Verb types and consonant gradation in Finnish

So this is a combination of consonant gradation part 2 and Verb types in Finnish.

If you have not read part 1 of consonant gradation, please check it on my feed.

You probably often see from my post the numbers after a verb like this:

Syödä (2) = to eat

The number is what group the verb belong to. This post is all about type of verbs. When you know verb types you can conjugate it easier :D

I’m quite impressed with this free app for Finnish learning. You can watch Yle videos and the see the transcript. Press the word (or the collocation) and it will show the meaning. Looks like you can save words too. Works in the browser and in the apps. There are animations too.

Finns love to talk about weather, some question you can use to start a small talk with Finnish people.

Consonant gradations in Finnish (part 1)

This is an old blogpost on my blog that I wrote long time ago, I don’t know if you’ve read it, so I share it here again.

Part 1 is about rules of consonant gradation of nouns, pronouns, adjectives. Part 2 will be about verbs.

EXCEPTIONS:

-uku- –> -uvu– : puku -> puvu/n

-yky- –> -yvy- : kyky –> kyvy/n

–rki- (-rke-) –> -rje-: järki –> järje/n

–lki- (-lke-) –> -lje– : jälki –> jälje/n

Some may ask how to remember all these things, so here are tips:

– For writing: you can check it out from the online or offline dictionaries. Read in Finnish a lot, then the words’ cases will come to your mind automatically.

– For speaking: forget Finnish grammar. Just say what you think. You can always ask people to correct you. Dare to make mistakes! Note the word that you said incorrectly, then check them later.
