🕯️ The Brussels Memorial is taking shape, even when we are not posting about it❗

We know you have been waiting for more updates, and we promise there is plenty happening behind the scenes. Today, we want to answer one of the questions we receive most often: how will we reproduce the handwriting of victims of totalitarian regimes, preserving their unique character and personal stories while ensuring that every word remains legible? ✍️📜

🏛️ The answer lies in a fascinating technology known as graphic concrete, a modern and proven technique that allows images, text, and intricate details to be incorporated into concrete surfaces.

🔎 So, how does it work?

1️⃣ Each unique handwritten letter is transferred onto a special membrane, known as a surface retarder, and delivered to the precast concrete factory.

2️⃣ The membrane is placed at the bottom of the mould, with the casting setup and reinforcement prepared around and above it.

3️⃣ Concrete is poured into the mould, incorporating the necessary reinforcement to ensure the paving slab is strong and durable.

4️⃣ Once the concrete has set sufficiently, usually after approximately one day, the slab is removed from the mould.

5️⃣ A high-pressure cleaner washes away the unset surface cement, exposing the graphics beneath. The handwritten letters emerge, preserving their distinctive character in the concrete.

6️⃣ The finished paving slab is ready to be transported and installed at the Memorial in Brussels, where these personal traces of history will become part of a shared European place of remembrance.

✍️ What makes this technology so important is the way it brings together precision and human individuality. Every letter is unique, and every story deserves to be treated with care. Graphic concrete offers a way to preserve these handwritten testimonies in a durable, legible, and meaningful form, allowing visitors to encounter the human dimension of history in the very fabric of the Memorial 🕯️

Näyttely: Arkkitehtuurikilpailut 150

1876 – tänään – huomenna – 150 vuotta tulevaisuuden suunnittelua

Vuonna 2026 Suomen Arkkitehtiliitto juhlistaa arkkitehtuurikilpailujen 150 -vuotista historiaa. Arkkitehtuurikilpailujen kautta ovat syntyneet monet maamme merkittävimmät rakennukset ja kaupunkitilat. Vuonna 1876 käynnistynyt kilpailuperinne on luonut merkittävän ja näkyvän perustan tämän päivän rakennetulle ympäristölle ja kaupunkikuvalle.

TamSAFAn näyttelyosastolla tuodaan esille keskeisiä näkökohtia ja hyviä esimerkkejä arkkitehtuurikilpailujen kautta toteutuneista kohteista – jo 1800-luvun lopulta lähtien. Tampereella toteutuneita kohteita löytyy myös näyttelyssä olevalta sijaintikartalta.

Näyttely: Aalto Works

Kolmestatoista arkkitehtuurikohteesta muodostuva Aalto Works -sarja nimettiin osaksi UNESCO:n maailmanperintöä heinäkuussa 2026. Kokonaisuus nostaa keskeiseen rooliin Alvar, Aino ja Elissa Aallon modernin arkkitehtuurin, jolle on leimallista humaani suunnitteluote. Aalto Works on ennenkaikkea tunnustus Aaltojen ajattelulle ja ihmislähtöiselle suunnittelulle, josta sittemmin on tullut olennainen osa suomalaista arkkitehtuuria ja muotoilua.

A façade tells a story. ✨
At Fabriikin Frami ja Facto Residential Building in Turku, history lives on through graphic concrete. Inspired by an old photograph taken during the dismantling of local railway tracks, this custom-designed façade features a dramatic rail image stretching the entire height of the building.

Located in Turku‘s historic railway district, next to the Logomo event venue, the design connects the area’s industrial past with contemporary living.
