Have you ever been in a situation, when you felt insecure about your role or you feared to be furloughed or laid off?
In such situations, what do you do?
Just doing your job better, wouldn’t guarantee you a safety net in hard times. You need a new, better strategy.
After being in a field for several years, any professional starts developing expertise. At this stage, investing in doing more of what you’re good at will yield only incremental improvements.
If you are looking to become invaluable to your organization, the surest way is to add value to people around you, more importantly to people from other adjacent functional areas.
In doing so, you communicate to your superiors that you not only understand but can also work cross-functionally. This will make you a valuable asset for the leaders in your company.
So where do you start?
Recently, the World Economic Forum listed a key skill, to master, that is increasingly being asked by employers is Problem-solving skills.
Why problem-solving?
Because it works across domains. It doesn’t matter from which field you are coming from.
But if you understand the methods of problem-solving, you can solve problems in your own field, but more importantly, you can understand and approach problems in other fields as well.
And this is the surest way to become irreplaceable.

It is a satisfying feeling when you arrive at an elegant solution to a problem.
As you progress in your career, problems you solve grow in complexity and magnitude, as does the impact of your decisions.
But when stakes are high, making a bad decision because of flawed reasoning and subconscious prejudices is not an option. You need to master problem-solving skills.
Problem-solving is about making better decisions on complex situations and challenges be it at our workplaces, policy spheres and personal lives.
Good problem-solving is a process, not a quick mental calculation or a logical deduction.
It is a systematic approach that starts with
1. Defining the problems
2. Disaggregating them into its components or manageable pieces
3. Tackling those pieces one by one
4. Finally synthesizing your findings & tell a powerful story
Invest in sharpening your analytical reasoning and problem-solving capabilities.

When building new products, processes, or even businesses, many companies don't put enough emphasis on defining the problems.
Instead, they are attempting to justify why those issues matter.
Without the right focus, organizations miss opportunities, waste resources, and end up pursuing initiatives that aren’t aligned with their strategic outlook.
Organizations have to become better at asking the right questions to tackle the right problems.
Asking better questions delivers better results.
