COSM Talks

The last call for new participants (registration dl 21.9) - the 7th edition of the COSM 1 course on culture, organisation and sustainability. If you think it is worth recommending it to your colleagues and friends - you are very welcome to do so - this is the last chance/issue before the change (rearrangement into the new set of courses planned for 2025/26). The course will start on 1 October - we welcome a few more people to join our small but determined and well-curated gang: guests from the UK, Korea, Sweden and Brazil and the 24 students and professionals who have registered so far...

Kai Brennert (Cambodia) - the founder of Edge and Story, an evaluation, research and policy consultancy for culture and sustainable development, the author of Curious Patterns, a monthly newsletter that explores current issues and policies in the field of arts, impact, international cooperation and sustainable development.

Anne Stenros (Finland / Japan) - the professor at the Nagaoka University of Technology and the Globis University in Tokyo,
a multi-awarded creative and the visionary who brings over 30 years of experience in design and architecture, creative leadership, business transformation, and design research and innovation.

Nancy Duxbury (Portugal) the senior researcher from the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, who is one of the top world experts in creative tourism development and culture in local sustainable development; the author and editor of "Cultural Sustainability, Tourism and Development: (Re)articulations in Tourism Contexts (Routledge, 2021); and Creative Tourism: Activating Cultural Resources and Engaging Creative Travellers (CABI, 2021).

Sanna Lehtinen (Finland) - a Research Fellow in the Transdisciplinary Arts Studies unit at Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture. the President of the Finnish Society for Aesthetics, her research focuses on urban and environmental aesthetics and the philosophy of the city;

Michele Trimarchi (Italy) - a founder and president of Tools for Culture, a professor of Public Economics (Magna Graecia Catanzaro), teaches Cultural Economics (IUAV Venice) and Lateral Thinking (IED Rome); expert in many cultural co-operation projects funded by UNESCO, World Bank and the EU.

Stefania Donini (UK) - PhD, Audience Research Officer for the Paisley Museum Re-Imagined project, she plans and delivers audience consultations, user testing and prototyping for the museum redisplay and social spaces. Her research focuses on participatory practices of community engagement and public programming.

COSM teaching modules for cultural professionals (www.cosm.fi) designed at Humak were presented at Lund University in the frame of the panel on Existential Sustainability. Our school as the place that offers education to largest number of graduates of cultural management in Finland feels responsible to re-navigate the role of future cultural producers to the direction of sustainability related values. Our senior lecturer Marcin Poprawski shared our experience and students’ practical response with the audience of the ‘Buzz for Europe’ Conference gathered in the Universitetshuset.

One of the perspectives shared was the testimony of Humak student Mayreth Wolff who used COSM in her work practice and confirmed that cultural and creative industries professionals can be the prime operators of sustainability-oriented change, by creating new stories to tell, new narratives, by developing new formats and new horizons to reach and give the silent and forgotten voices a tone. COSM courses are focused on cultural managers’ work that is assisting and provoking all possible attempts to make our life more sustainable, balanced, and responsible, based on intergenerational dialogue. The second perspective is the one from the inside of cultural and creative sector ecosystems as aimed to secure more healthy organizational cultures in creative work environment.
