Educational page which shares interesting content and information about Finnic history and mythology ⌘ What does the term Finnic mean?

It can be both a linguistic and an ethnic descriptive term. Other terms used to describe the same subject are Fennic, Baltic Finnic, Balto-Finnic or Balto-Fennic. In this site the word Finnic is used because it is simple, memorable and to the point.

⌘ Who are the Finnic people? The Finnic people are Finno-Ugric group of peoples who have inhabited Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region for up to 10,000 years according to a theory.

⌘ What are the Finnic languages? The Finnic languages are a branch of the Uralic language family spoken around the Baltic Sea by about 7 million people. The most spoken Finnic languages are Finnish, Estonian and Karelian.

⌘ What can you tell me about Finnic mythology? Finnic mythology has survived through times within an oral tradition of mythical poem-singing and folklore. Finnic mythology is a complex entity to cover as a whole and it varies locally. The Kalevala - National Epic of Finland and Karelia - and the Kalevipoeg - National Epic of Estonia - are the greatest single written pieces about Finnic mythology.

The Häme Castle is looking beautiful this time of the year! The castle was built in the 13th century and it is located in Hämeenlinna, Southern Finland.

Happy Kalevala Day! Hyvää Kalevalan päivää!

The Kalevala is the National Epic of Finland and Karelia. It was compiled between 1835-1849 by Elias Lönnrot and it is the greatest single written piece of Finnish mythology and oral folklore.

Also featured in the picture is the close cousin of Kalevala - called The Kalevipoeg - which is the Estonian equivalent of Kalevala.

Kalevala - The National Epic of Finland and Karelia - and Kalevipoeg - The National Epic of Estonia - are the greatest single written pieces of Finnic mythology and oral folklore.

Although they were both compiled and written in the 1800s the poetry and folklore in them is ancient - dating back hundreds or perhaps even thousands of years.

Forget Halloween - Kekri is here!

Kekri - or keyri or köyri - is a traditional Finnish harvest festival which was celebrated in autumn when the food for the winter had been secured and the duties of the year had been done.

Kekri is often compared to its distant cousin Halloween, and they share quite many similarities. Kekri has no strict celebration date, but can be placed roughly between October and November.

Etymology: Kekri means residuum and refers to the remnant of harvest time.

A great way to approach to Finnish centennial celebration is to start reading the Old Kalevala. In the picture the Old Kalevala is accompanied by the Suontaka Sword (replica - duh). 🇫🇮️
