🌍 BEYOND TRAVEL: WHEN A DMC BECOMES A LOCAL KNOWLEDGE PARTNER
What if a destination’s most valuable tourism product is not only what visitors can see — but what they can learn?
We often think of a Destination Management Company (DMC) through hotels, transportation, guides, activities and logistics.
But there is another model worth exploring.
For professional groups, executive learning journeys, study tours, associations and special-interest travellers, the DMC can play a much deeper role: connecting international visitors with the people, knowledge and capabilities of a destination.
A company visit can become a case study.
A conversation with a practitioner can become part of an executive learning journey.
Local expertise can become an experience.
And the destination itself can become the classroom.
For GapEdu, this idea also has a special meaning.
More than a decade ago, GapEdu Founder Hanni Tran participated as a local practitioner in this model, joining international executive learning journeys and sharing field-based perspectives with visiting Executive MBA participants.
At the time, it was simply an exchange of experience.
Looking back today, it illustrates something we increasingly see as strategically important for tourism:
A strong DMC does not only know where to take people. It understands who to connect them with — and why that connection matters.
Our current partnership with Kon-Tiki Tours brings this idea back into focus. Its work in special-interest and study travel demonstrates how local expertise, trusted networks and a clear purpose can transform an itinerary into something much more meaningful.
Perhaps the future of destination management is not only about packaging destination assets.
It is also about unlocking destination knowledge and capabilities.
The destination provides the setting.
The local network provides the access.
Knowledge gives the journey depth.

🔴 GAPEDU CONGRATULATES HANNI TRAN ON ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL GLOBAL MISSION
From Policy & Practice to Global Thought Leadership
GapEdu – Global Consultancy on Development Policy & Practice proudly congratulates Hanni Tran, Founder of GapEdu, on the successful completion of another international mission with the World Tourism Forum Institute (WTFI), in her capacity as Editor-in-Chief of World Magazine.
The newly released World Magazine – Issue 17 | Special Issue: ANGOLA — Gateway to Investment and Opportunities marks another important milestone in a journey connecting global tourism leadership, investment, policy dialogue and development perspectives.
As Editor-in-Chief, Hanni continues to contribute to shaping World Magazine as a global platform for ideas and perspectives, bringing together the voices of international leaders, policymakers, investors and industry experts to advance conversations about the future of tourism.
At the heart of this edition is her Editor’s Letter, “Building What Comes Next,” reflecting a principle that strongly resonates with GapEdu’s own Policy-to-Practice philosophy:
“The question is no longer simply how tourism grows.
The question is how tourism creates development that endures.”
For GapEdu, this achievement carries a special significance.
Hanni’s work with World Magazine and WTFI complements her mission as Founder of GapEdu: connecting policy with practice, dialogue with implementation, international knowledge with local capacity, and global partnerships with lasting development impact.
It is also a reminder that professional missions across different organisations can reinforce a common purpose: creating platforms where knowledge is not only shared, but translated into ideas, partnerships and actions that can contribute to development.
Congratulations, Hanni, on another mission accomplished — and congratulations to the entire World Magazine Editorial Team, whose dedication, creativity and professionalism brought this special edition to life.
From Luanda to the world, another chapter has been documented.
Another global conversation has been preserved.
And another step has been taken toward Building What Comes Next. 🌍
Congratulations from all of us at GapEdu – Global Consultancy on Development Policy & Practice.

🌍 New Release | GapEdu Tourism Development Insights™
Episode 5 | From Development Funding to Investment Capability
Can tourism development continue when external funding ends?
For decades, development programmes have helped destinations strengthen tourism through policies, infrastructure and capacity building. But the real measure of success begins after the project is completed.
In Episode 5 of GapEdu Tourism Development Insights™, we explore a fundamental shift taking place in global tourism development—from donor dependency to investment capability.
Rather than asking "Who will fund our next project?", successful destinations are now asking:
"How can we build investment systems that continue creating value long after external funding has ended?"
The article explores:
🔹 Building tourism investment ecosystems
🔹 Blended finance as a catalyst for private investment
🔹 Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs)
🔹 Developing local investment pipelines
🔹 Destination investment readiness
🔹 Why sustainable tourism depends on permanent investment capability
This perspective also reflects the growing global conversation around Investment and Security, the overarching theme of the Global Tourism Forum Annual Meeting 2026, to which GapEdu – Global Consultancy on Development Policy and Practice is honoured to contribute through the development of the concept note and the strategic identification of distinguished speakers.
This episode focuses on the Investment pillar.
In Episode 6, we will explore the second pillar and examine why security has become the new currency of tourism investment.

🌍 NEW ARTICLE | GapEdu Tourism Development Insights™ – Episode 4
Why Market Access Is Not Marketing
Building Investor Confidence in the New Era of Tourism
For decades, tourism success has been measured by visitor arrivals and destination marketing.
But is that still enough?
In today's increasingly complex global environment, destinations are competing not only for tourists—but also for investment, infrastructure, strategic partnerships and long-term confidence.
Our latest article explores an important question:
What if the real competitive advantage is not marketing, but investor confidence?
Drawing on the latest insights from UN Tourism, UNCTAD, the World Bank, UNESCO, the Asian Development Bank, the African Development Bank, the European Investment Bank and industry initiatives such as the TUI Care Foundation, Episode 4 introduces the GapEdu Three-Layer Tourism Market Access Framework™:
🔹 Global Policy & Strategic Direction
🔹 Development Finance & Investment Enablement
🔹 Implementation & Local Impact
Together, these three layers demonstrate that sustainable tourism competitiveness is built through strong governance, investment readiness, institutional capability and effective implementation—not promotion alone.
As destinations navigate an increasingly competitive and uncertain world, market access is no longer just about reaching visitors.
It is about creating an environment where investors have the confidence to commit for the long term.
