Celebrating Chinese New Year through hands-on exploration and creativity! In the tuff tray, the children made their own ‘Chinese noodles’ with different materials and practiced using chopsticks. They also created colorful Chinese lanterns with bubble wrap and designed a traditional fish using vibrant colors — all while enjoying festive music. A joyful sensory and cultural experience full of learning and fun!

Today we took our learning outdoors, enjoying a beautiful snowy day at the park. During circle time, surrounded by fresh snow, the children explored colors by mixing them in the snow, created different shapes using molds, and even built a snowman using natural materials. A wonderful opportunity to connect with nature, encourage creativity, and experience a different kind of circle time in the fresh winter air.

Through open-ended exploration with loose parts, the children manipulated different materials such as egg cartons, skewers, straws, and cardboard. They experimented with balance, positioning, and structure, creating their own constructions. Some even formed geometric shapes, building houses and numbers. A hands-on experience supporting fine motor skills, early maths, problem-solving, and creativity.

✨‼️ Bringing Snow Indoors: Learning Through Winter Play

We brought some snow from outside into the classroom and explored it through play, modeling, and painting. The children observed how colors mix, how different shapes can be created, and how the snow changes its state over time. A hands-on sensory experience that encouraged curiosity, creativity, and scientific thinking.

Finland will introduce English-language upper secondary education (lukio) for the first time in autumn 2026, marking a major change in the country’s school system. Several cities, including Helsinki, Pori, Vantaa, Tampere and Oulu, will offer full English-medium programmes following the Finnish national curriculum.

Admission will be highly competitive, as each school will offer only a limited number of seats. Entry is based on a national English-language entrance exam, and demand is expected to be very high among both Finnish and international students.

Beginning in 2028, students in these programmes will also be able to take parts of the Finnish matriculation exam in English, making Finland’s education system more accessible to non-Finnish speakers than ever before.

During circle time, we explored the letter sounds in the word ROBOT and connected them to hands-on learning. The children then created their own robots through free choice, using a variety of materials, and later expanded their ideas with construction materials, supporting and helping the younger children along the way. This activity encouraged early literacy, creativity, collaboration, and peer support :)

Inspired by the creative spirit of the 1980s, the children created their own robots using recycled materials. They designed and built them, gave them names, and decided to turn them into bags so they could take their robots with them everywhere. One of the robots even became a ‘hungry robot’, now cared for and fed by the youngest children in the school. This child-led activity supported creativity, autonomy, fine motor skills, and imaginative thinking, just like in the 1980s, when making things by hand was part of everyday play 🤖

With so much snow around us, the children took advantage of this winter wonderland to draw, write, and strengthen their fine motor skills. They discovered that creativity doesn’t only come from pencils and paper, snow can be an amazing canvas too! Learning through play, exploration, and winter fun ❄️✨
