Kelloseppäkoulu - The Finnish School of Watchmaking

Viime viikonloppuna ensimmäinen Kellosepän ja mikromekaanikon kädentaidot -kurssi starttasi. Heti ensimmäisestä päivästä alkaen kurssilaiset pääsivät tekemään käsin ja oppimaan perusteita viilaamalla ensimmäisiä työkaluja kelloseppäopettaja Juha Kauppisen johdolla.

Edessä on kuukausien mittainen matka kohti tarkempia kädentaitoja, uusien työmenetelmien oppimista sekä kellosepän sekä mikromekaniikan maailmaan tutustumista. On ilo seurata, kuinka kädentaidot ja varmuus työskentelyyn kehittyvät kurssin edetessä.

Last weekend marked the start of the first Kellosepän ja mikromekaanikon kädentaidot (“Watchmaking and Micromechanics Hand Skills”) course. From day one, participants got hands-on experience, learning some of the fundamentals by filing their first tools under the guidance of watchmaking instructor Juha Kauppinen.

Ahead lies a months-long journey of developing precision hand skills, learning new working techniques, and exploring the fascinating worlds of watchmaking and micromechanics. It’s a pleasure to follow how both craftsmanship and confidence grow as the course progresses.

Watchmakers BBQ & Final Stop of the Road Trip 🚗

Days 4 & 5 of the Independent Watchmaker Course’s trip to Switzerland.

Day 4
On Thursday, we stayed in Neuchâtel to visit WOSTEP, where we were welcomed with a BBQ lunch. It was a great opportunity to share experiences and stories around watchmaking and to get to know each other.

After lunch, Georgios Kalapotharakos, one of the watchmaking instructors, gave us an overview of the school’s history, followed by a tour of the workshops. We had the chance to see the different projects the WOSTEP students were working on and to connect further through discussions around watchmaking.

A big thank you to WOSTEP for having us. It was a pleasure to connect and exchange experiences.

Day 5
For the final stop of our horological road trip, we headed to Renens to visit Petermann Bédat. We were warmly welcomed by Antti Miettinen, who recently introduced our course to traditional high-end movement decoration. He showed us around the workshop and introduced us to their watchmakers, giving us the opportunity to follow their work and discuss the different techniques and approaches they use.

Florian Bédat, one of the founders, also joined us to present some of the remarkable watches they have created.

Horological Road Trip Continues 🚗

Day 3 of the Independent Watchmaker Course’s trip to Switzerland.

Early Wednesday morning, we set off to the Val-de-Travers to meet Kari Voutilainen, who generously guided us through several of his companies and their different locations.

We began in Fleurier with a visit to Brodbeck Guillochage, a workshop dedicated to preserving and advancing the traditional art of hand guilloché. We had the opportunity to see the machines in use and gain a better understanding of the processes behind the work.

We were also happy to meet our alumna Ida, who works at the company in enamelling. She showed us some of her current projects and shared insight into the techniques she uses.

Next, we continued to St‑Sulpice to visit Comblémine SA, where bespoke dials are produced. There, we were introduced to the different techniques and machinery involved in dial manufacturing.

The final stop of the tour was Atelier Voutilainen at Chapeau de Napoléon. As the main location for assembly and final finishing, we were able to observe watchmakers at the bench polishing and completing timepieces. The visit concluded with a look at several finished watches.

A sincere thank you to Kari for the generous and in-depth introduction to your workshops and for sharing how your work comes together.

In the afternoon, we also had the chance to visit the Cartier Watchmaking Institute in Couvet, where one of the instructors, Marc‑Martin Renaud, introduced us to their programme and gave us a tour of the workshops. We were able to see students at work and were introduced to some Cartier movements they practise on.

Horological Road Trip 🕰️🚗

Days 1 & 2 of the Independent Watchmaker course’s trip to Switzerland.

Day 1

On Monday, we headed to La Chaux-de-Fonds, where we were warmly welcomed to Greubel Forsey by our school’s alumnus Anu Halonen. She showed us around their ateliee, giving us a closer look at several departments and the level of detail behind their work. And also seeing the beautiful finished products up close.

We then continued to Morteau to visit Lycée Edgar Faure, where David Grandvuillemin introduced us to their impressive watchmaking and jewellery workshops and told us about their programmes.

In the evening, we made our way to Creux du Van to meet Anu again. We walked up together to take in the views, enjoyed a traditional cheese fondue, and ended the day watching the sunset—with a few mountain goats making an appearance. 🐐

Day 2

On Tuesday morning, we visited the atelier of Luca Soprana in Vaumarcus. He introduced us to his workshop and shared his journey as an independent maker, as well as how the atelier has grown over time.

Afterwards, we returned to La Chaux-de-Fonds to visit another of our alumni, Torsti Laine, at Laine Watches. We gained insight into his machinery and processes, with the guilloché machine which they use on the dials, being a particular highlight for many of us.

A sincere thank you to Anu, Greubel Forsey, David, Luca, and Torsti for welcoming us and sharing your work, ateliers, campus, and experiences. The visits gave us valuable perspectives for the future.
