EdTech Needs Incubation, Not Just Acceleration | Niko Lindholm

Not every EdTech company should be pushed straight toward the market or investors.

In this short clip, Niko Lindholm explains why incubation can play a different role from acceleration.
Accelerators often focus on helping companies reach the market or secure investment.

An incubation program can instead create more space to develop a solution that is informed by research and, over time, has the potential to become evidence-based.

That helps fill an important gap for future EdTech companies.

How does meaningful EdTech actually reach schools?

In Episode #77, Marjo Kenttälä from the City of Helsinki / Testbed Helsinki takes us into the practical side of educational innovation: what happens after a good idea becomes a product and has to work in a real classroom.

From co-development with teachers and learners to usability, regulation, procurement and implementation, this conversation explores why pedagogy has to come before technology, and why even the best EdTech only matters if schools can actually adopt and use it.

A Strong Ecosystem Helps You Find the Right People

What happens after an EdTech founder asks for help?

Sevil Bayraktar explains what a strong innovation ecosystem can look like in practice.

The value is not that everyone already has the answer. It is that people are willing to help, and if they cannot help directly, they connect you with the right person who can.

For Sevil, that support has also created something less tangible but equally important: the confidence and encouragement to keep moving forward.

Building EdTech is not only about the founder or the product.

Sevil Bayraktar explains how the ecosystem around the University of Helsinki, the City of Helsinki and Helsinki Education Hub supported her journey as an international entrepreneur.

What mattered was not only access to institutions, but access to people, researchers and networks, and the confidence that she was not alone in the process.

Sometimes a strong ecosystem gives founders something very simple but very important: the confidence to ask, “Could you please help us?”

Research and EdTech Move at Different Speeds

Research can take years. Technology and education can change much faster.

In this short clip, Sevil Bayraktar explains the challenge of building research-based EdTech when evidence, product development and educational change are moving on very different timelines.

The real issue is not simply that time is limited. It’s that research and innovation often operate at different speeds.

What Gets Lost When Research Becomes an EdTech Product?

Learning is a messy process and rarely straightforward. Technology, on the other hand, should be easy enough that almost anyone can use it.

Niina Halonen explains why this creates a difficult journey for research-based EdTech.

You cannot simply add words like engaging, supportive or scaffolding and call a product pedagogically meaningful.

When complex learning processes are translated into simple technology, compromises have to be made.

The real question is: what can be simplified without losing what learning actually needs?

EdTech is Still Too Focused on Knowledge Transmission

Learning is not only about delivering information. It is also about collaboration, co-creation and building new understanding together.

In this clip, Niina Halonen points to a gap in EdTech: we still have too few technologies designed for these more collaborative forms of learning.

Why can good EdTech be harder to adopt?

In this short clip, Niina Halonen explains a paradox at the heart of educational innovation:

The more an EdTech solution reflects modern learning theory, the less familiar it may feel to users accustomed to traditional teaching.

That means some of the most pedagogically meaningful tools can actually be harder to introduce into schools.
