Are thick walls and corners eating up your WiFi signal? To tackle this issue, especially in the upcoming age of 6G, researchers at Aalto University have developed a low-tech solution: metacrystals.

Metacrystals are passive, 3D-printed smart panels that can shape wireless signals without extra electronics, a power supply or active tuning. No more cable mess! 🔌

Unlike many existing intelligent surfaces, these panels can also handle several incoming waves at the same time, operate over different frequency bands simultaneously, work in reflection or transmission mode, and even fully absorb unwanted signals.

According to doctoral researcher Mahdi Asgari, the panels could be installed on walls, ceilings, furniture, or other surfaces to redirect signals around corners, into shadowed areas or toward specific users or devices. 'The hope would be that in the future we can see these scalable, smart wireless environments put to practical application in indoor spaces and outdoor urban settings, on building walls or other architectural surfaces,' he says.

Interested in collaborating on programmable metasurfaces, intelligent wireless infrastructure and low-cost passive signal-control technologies. Read more in the comments! 👇

Mahtavia uutisia!⚡ABB tukee merkittävällä panostuksella energiamurrokseen liittyvän suomalaisen osaamisen kehittämistä ja lahjoittaa 1,5 miljoonaa euroa Aalto-yliopistolle. ABB:n lahjoitus kohdistuu erityisesti tehoelektroniikan professuuriin.

"Uudet tehopuolijohdeteknologiat, suuntaajaratkaisut ja tekoälyyn perustuvat suunnittelu- ja optimointimenetelmät muuttavat nopeasti tehoelektroniikan alaa. Uusi professuuri vastaa tähän kehitykseen tutkimalla ja opettamalla seuraavan sukupolven ratkaisuja tulevaisuuden huippuosaajille. Lämmin kiitos ABB:lle tärkeästä ja merkittävästä lahjoituksesta”, sanoo Aalto-yliopiston sähkötekniikan korkeakoulun dekaani Jussi Ryynänen.

Lahjoitus on osa merkittävää Aalto-yliopiston saamaa energia-alan lahjoituskokonaisuutta, joka tukee Energiasiirtymän osaamiskeskusta (House of Energy Transition). Osaamiskeskuksen tavoitteena on edistää alaan liittyvää tutkimusta sekä teollisuuden ja yhteiskunnan eri toimijoiden välistä vaikuttavaa yhteistyötä. 🤝

"Uskomme, että vihreän siirtymän läpimurtoratkaisut vaativat taloudellisen panostuksen lisäksi vahvoja kumppanuuksia teollisuuden, akateemisen maailman ja tutkimuslaitosten välillä. Tukemalla House of Energy Transition -osaamiskeskusta ja kohdennettua tutkimusta saamme näkymän uusiin pinnalle nouseviin aiheisiin", sanoo ABB Oy:n LV System Drives -liiketoimintayksikön johtaja Peter Lindgren.

In this entry of series Communications Manager Ira Matilainen shares how she has promoted equality, diversity and inclusion at Aalto University. 🌈🦄

'Inclusivity is integral to everything we do in communications. We always consider who the message is for and how best to reach them,' Matilainen says. 'With communication, we also have the power to shape perceptions – for example, about what kinds of people work or study in certain fields.'

'Beyond reflecting in my work on the stories we tell people, I want to look after my own curiosity and the perspectives I’m exposing myself to,' she says. 'I try to challenge myself not to consume only content from people who are similar to me and agree with me on everything. In this era of aggressive social media algorithms and polarisation, I feel the world especially needs more humanity and compassion.' 🤝

Matilainen believes that listening to diverse people and being exposed to varied stories and viewpoints builds a strong foundation for everyday empathy and consideration. 'Curiosity about difference, a genuine desire to understand, and the capacity for empathy create better conditions for meaningful encounters, and naturally also strengthen the sense of community,' she concludes.

Aalto University is involved in four research projects that have been awarded the Rise to Challenge (Näytönpaikka) funding by Business Finland. 🥳

One of them, Q-GEN, brings together the Natural Resources Institute Finland, VTT, Aalto University and the University of Helsinki. Professor Ilkka Tittonen (School of Electrical Engineering) is part of the team that will explore quantum computing applied to bio and DNA data to advance genomics, biomaterials engineering, enzyme design and biological modelling.

The consortium will develop computational proof-of-concepts for genome-assisted breeding and methods for utilising sustainable biobased materials and biomass, supporting new ventures and strengthening national position in quantum-enabled life sciences.

Congratulations to all the teams!
