Miten varmistamme, että lapset ja nuoret osaavat suojautua verkon riskeiltä? 🫣 Aalto-yliopiston toteuttamassa Cyber Citizen -hankkeessa on kehitetty peruskouluun valmiit oppituntimateriaalit kyberturvallisuuden opettamiseen, jotta opetus ei olisi kiinni yksittäisen opettajan ajasta tai aiemmasta osaamisesta.
Kyberturva-asiantuntija Tuomas Heikkinen muistuttaa, että lapset ja nuoret käyttävät digipalveluja teknisesti sujuvasti, m***a eivät aina hahmota oman toiminnan seurauksia tai tapoja ylläpitää turvallisuutta.
”Lasten ja nuorten turvallinen digiarki ei synny itsestään, vaan he tarvitsevat aikuisten tukea ja mahdollisuuksia oppia. Kun opetetaan kyberturvallisuustaitoja, lähtökohdaksi kannattaa ottaa lasten ja nuorten arjessa läsnä olevat asiat. Kyberturvallisuudessa on kuitenkin kyse turvallisuudesta ja sitä pitää harjoitella, aivan kuten liikenneturvallisuutta”, Heikkinen kertoo.

Congratulations to Janne Seppänen on his appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation! ⚡He has previously served as Professor of Practice at Aalto while simultaneously working at Fingrid, Finland’s transmission system operator.
For Seppänen, academic work has been a calling for quite some time.
'Although working in industry has been extremely rewarding and I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to developing Finland’s transmission grid, I’ve always felt a strong interest in research and teaching.
Power transmission systems are undergoing an unprecedented period of transformation. Renewable electricity generation and new forms of electricity consumption are reshaping the power system beyond what it was originally designed for. At the same time, a strong and reliable transmission grid is an important national competitive advantage. It enables industrial investment and helps attract, for example, data centers and other power-intensive businesses to Finland.
To the best of my knowledge, there are no other professorships in Finland focusing exclusively on power transmission systems, even though the field has become increasingly important. That makes this role both a significant responsibility and an exciting opportunity.
I look forward to educating the next generation of experts, conducting impactful research in collaboration with companies and other research organisations, and contributing to the development of tomorrow’s power system.'

In the future, an MRI device might fit into the back of an ambulance. In the Project Work course, our master's students are designing practical solutions for real-world issues.
One team worked on a relatively smaller, accessible MRI scanner that has been under development at Aalto University for several years. A commercial version based on this research could, for example, speed up stroke diagnosis by allowing the scanner to be transported by ambulance to the patient.
The device can already produce MR images, but its electronics and signal quality still require refinement. For their project, students Teemu Rauha and Elias Viitanen chose to design new gradient filters for an accessible MRI scanner, aiming to reduce interference and improve image quality.

How modern digital tools can strengthen disaster preparedness, real-time monitoring, communication, and emergency response operations? 🌋🌊 These topics were covered this spring in an intensive course titled “Digital Technologies for Response Management in Natural Disasters”.
As Dr. Alexis Dowhuszko, one of the course’s responsible teachers, noted: 'Natural disasters are growing more frequent and complex due to climate change, urbanisation, and our increasing dependence on digital infrastructure. At the same time, new technologies such as wireless communications, satellite systems, artificial intelligence, drones, and digital sensing are creating new possibilities for improving emergency response and disaster management.’
The course was held with visiting professors from India. 🇫🇮 🇮🇳🤝 According to Dowhuszko, collaboration with Indian universities brings together complementary expertise, perspectives, and real-world experience in both disaster management and digital technologies. The partnership also promotes international exchange in education and research, allowing students and researchers to learn from different academic cultures and application contexts.
