Climate change, resource depletion, and an aging population – these are some of the challenges of humankind that we work on solving at the School of Electrical Engineering. The results of our research are, for instance, applied in smart phones, power grids, healthcare, and satellites. Our research is based on excellent cooperation, and we have exceptionally good connections to the business world. 'Medical devices have always been a particular area of interest for me because of their direct impact on people’s lives.' 🦾

Antonina Strzelecka is a second-year student in the Health Technology Engineering Master’s Programme, specializing in Health Instrumentation and Wearables. She is also completing a minor in Biomedical Engineering.

'This combination of engineering, healthcare, and real-world impact is what made the programme especially appealing to me,' she says.

‘I wanted our songs to sound the same as the albums of “real bands”. Through recording, I learned to listen to music with fresh ears and wanted to know how sound is created technically.’ 🎶

Studies of the Acoustics and Audio Technology master's programme have opened many doors for alum Sauli Norja: by day, he works in research and development at audio manufacturer Genelec, and spends his free time as a sound engineer for Ellimei. 👩‍🎤

Norja encourages students to approach employers with an open mind by email or phone. That way the presentation is more informal, and may lead to unexpected collaboration. ‘During the interview, Genelec suggested topics they were interested in but couldn’t justify spending extra staff hours on. We found one that suited my skills and interests,’ he says, thinking back on his bachelor's thesis.

The initial collaboration landed him a master's thesis, then a permanent job in Genelec's product development team.

Loistavia uutisia: Professori Jaan Praksille on myönnetty Alfred Kordelinin palkinto!🏆 Tunnustus annetaan yhteiskunnallisesti vaikuttavasta ja ajankohtaisesta toiminnasta taiteen, tieteen tai kansanvalistuksen hyväksi.

Palkinnon myöntänyt Alfred Kordelinin säätiö kiittää Praksia poikkeuksellisen vaikuttavasta urasta suomalaisen avaruusteknologian edelläkävijänä ja uudistajana. Säätiö kertoo, että Praksin työ on lisännyt ymmärrystä siitä, millainen merkitys avaruusteknologialla on kestävän tulevaisuuden rakentamisessa. Hänen työnsä myös osoittaa konkreettisesti, miten tutkimus voi samanaikaisesti tuottaa uutta tietoa, kasvattaa osaamista ja luoda uusia elinkeinoja.

Jacek Pawlak dreams of decarbonising the hydrogen sector 💚 The second-year master's student is studying Hydrogen and Electric Systems at Aalto University.

'This field can be interesting for people generally interested in energy transition, who may not have even thought of hydrogen in this context,' he says, referring to the rising interest in hydrogen as a form of clean energy. 'My studies, projects and career events have shown me both existing and planned green hydrogen projects in Finland, as well as new, varied uses of hydrogen.'

Meet Arttu Jääskeläinen, a second-year student in Energy Systems and Markets. With a background in energy and environmental engineering studies at an applied sciences university, he decided to pursue a master's degree to expand his strategic knowledge in the field. 💡

'I am generally interested in how renewable energy can reduce the amount of imported electricity we use,' Arttu says.

Energy Systems and Markets is one of the four majors within the Advanced Energy Solutions master's programme, organised between three different schools of Aalto University. Get ready now, as the next application period opens on 7th December!
