ASIF - Aalto Student Intersectional Feminists

Dear fellow feminists, the pandemic abruptly interrupted our work with this student association and everyone on the board have since graduated. While we are sad to let this association go, we are proud to announce one last project from our part! An independent, self-made zine called vari*.
We accept submissions for our first issue on the topic Identity (interpreted however you want) until 30.11. Read more on our Instagram below. You can also connect with us on [email protected].

For our very first issue of vari* we are looking for essayists, illustrators, designers, artists and any creative persons to submit a work for the topic “identity”. It can be about your own identity, a friend’s story or just simple thoughts about it. ​​The format is open - essay, text art, poetry, video art, illustration, photograph, generative code, etc. ​​The size of the physical zine is A5 so keep that in mind for your visual work. Digital work will be displayed on the website. ​​ ​​Word limit: around 3500 characters including spaces. ​​DEADLINE: 30. November 2021 ​​Send your submission to: [email protected]. For larger files, please send a link to the video or a Wetransfer link. ​​ ​​We will let you know if your work is included in the issue shortly after the deadline. Hi I’m Hanna the other co-chairperson of AS IF?! and took the initiative to the association because Aalto needs a student driven platform for conversations around feminism. I study New media and am into obscure electronic machines, eating food and listening to songs on trains.

🍄🦔🍄Hey! I'm Isra, ASIF!?'s co-chairperson. Italian with South Asian genes, I hopped on a plane as soon as I could and never looked back. I lived in UK, Luxembourg and now I'm finally in Finland. My most recent travels have allowed me to experience the beauty of the world, as well as the hardships. I've seen how differences can bring people together and also tear them apart. One of the most life changing events was meeting feminists. Actual, real feminists. When I was little, I grew up surrounded by self proclaimed feminists who were really just violent and self-serving. I thought that's what it is all about, because there was no one to prove me wrong. When I came to Aalto I gladly met like-minded people who explained what this movement REALLY is. That's when I realised... hey, that's me! I'm a feminist! Or better, I'm an intersectional feminist. Personally, I like going deep into both gender and race issues (who would've thought it!?!?).
So here I am, working to spread the word on the real definition of feminism and fighting to provide struggling Aalto student with a safe space. Welcome to ASIF!?

💃🌴💃Karishma is passionate about applying design thinking to make a better future, interested in climate change and EdTech solutions. She loves traveling, outdoor sports activities, and dancing. She joined the ASIF board to make a difference in her network. Being a feminist, her goal is to put her belief into practice, help women raise their voice and enrich her knowledge of Feminism.

So, if you feel you can relate to her in one or another then meet us on 12th December 2019 and help us select the perfect board for next year. You never know, you might be running the next year board.

🐄👽🐄 Cili is a fashion designer turned visual communication designer/student/artist. She writes better in first person:I'm behind AS IF!?-s visuals and communications, it's fun to do this without a strict creative brief. In my free time I'm working on my trashy sci-fi story with ugly catlike aliens. If you wanna bond with me just send me sh*tty cat memes.

📀💿📀 M is a Sound in New Media student minoring in neuroscience. They are interested in ending class war, becoming a pop star, the icey-sea, and hot sauce on popcorn.

We want to thank TOKYO - Students of Arts, Design and Architecture for the Honorary Mention at this year's Maskerad. We are very happy our efforts to build a safer environment are being recognized!

A few words from Isra:
I can't believe I actually got an Honorary Mention. I do this work because I believe in it and never expected anyone to give anything back. But seeing that others also believe in you and support your work is amazing and highly motivating! This gives us the push we need to keep improving and turn ASIF!? into a big part of Aalto's community.
Obviously none of this would have happened without Hanna Thenór Årström, ASIF!?'s other co-chairperson managing the association with me. Everything started from a post she made on Facebook asking if there were any feminist associations on campus: the interest the post generated pushed her and others on the board to actually make this happen!

And now, on to organizing more fun feminist events!! 💪🏽💃🏽🎉
