BOVINE EMESIS 🐃🦬🐄🐂

Emesis (vomiting) in cattle is rare, abnormal, and usually indicates severe esophageal obstruction, chronic indigestion, or toxicity. While young calves may vomit, mature cattle generally only regurgitate during rumination. It is often caused by nerve damage, choke, or severe ruminal acidosis/alkalosis, and warrants immediate veterinary intervention.

Key Aspects of Emesis in Cattle:

Occurrence: Extremely rare in adult cattle, as they lack the well-developed vomiting reflex seen in dogs or humans.

Causes:

Esophageal Disorders: Obstruction (choke), tumors, or damage.

Metabolic Issues: Severe acidosis or alkalosis (often in calves).

Toxicity: Ingestion of toxins like rhododendron.

Neurological/Vagal Damage: Damage to nerves regulating the stomach.

Symptoms: Forceful expulsion of rumen content, salivation, choking, and distress.

Diagnosis: Veterinary evaluation of rumen pH (for acidosis/alkalosis) and endoscopic or ultrasound examination of the esophagus.

Treatment: Depends on the cause—surgical intervention for blockages, rumen pH modifiers (buffers like Buffalo Zone powder), and supportive care, such as liver tonics.

Important Distinctions:

Regurgitation: Normal digestion process where cattle bring up food (cud) to chew again.

Vomiting (Emesis): Violent, involuntary ejection of stomach contents.

Disclaimer: If a cow is vomiting, it is a critical sign of illness, and a veterinarian should be consulted immediately.

❓What exactly is Anaplasmosis?.... Welcome back class. From my round table here in the west side, allow me introduce to you a disease we call Anaplasmosis

✓. Anaplasmosis is a tick-borne disease that affects ruminants mainly cattle, sheep, goats, and buffaloes.
✓. It is caused by Anaplasma species, which are tiny bacteria that live inside red blood cells, belonging to the order Rickettsiales, family Anaplasmataceae.

These organisms cause destruction of red blood cells, leading to anemia, fever, weakness and sometimes death if not managed early.

The disease is found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions — between 40°N and 32°S — across Africa, Asia, Australia, the Americas and parts of southern

𝐃𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 – 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐨 𝐢𝐟 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐚𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
Dystocia refers to difficult or abnormal labor, where the animal cannot give birth naturally without assistance. It is commonly seen in cows, goats, sheep, and other domestic animals.

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬:

1. Fetal malpresentation:
The fetus is in the wrong position, such as breech or limb flexion.

2. Oversized fetus:
Often in heifers or first-time birthing animals.

3. Uterine inertia:
Weak or no uterine contractions.

4. Pelvic obstruction or birth canal abnormalities

5. Multiple fetuses (e.g., twins):
May become entangled.

𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚:

Prolonged straining without delivery

Restlessness and repeated lying down and getting up

Part of the fetus visible but no progress

No delivery after 2–3 hours of active labor

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐢𝐝 / 𝐎𝐧-𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭:

1. Use clean equipment:
Sanitise hands and instruments.

2. Assess the situation carefully:
Gently examine the birth canal to identify fetal position.

3. Attempt gentle correction if trained:
Never use excessive force.

4. Call a veterinarian if in doubt or if progress stalls:
In some cases, a C-section may be necessary.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬:

Provide proper nutrition during pregnancy

Select appropriate breeding stock

Monitor animals nearing parturition

Assist promptly if signs of difficulty appear

Injection Sites in Farm Animals: A Quick Guide for Farmers

As a veterinary doctor, I often get asked: “Where is the best place to give injections in my animals?” Giving shots the right way keeps animals healthy and protects meat quality—especially in food-producing animals. Here's a simple guide to help you do it right:

1. Intramuscular (IM) Injections – Into the Muscle
These go deep and release medicine slowly over time.

Goats: In the neck (just ahead of the shoulder). Back leg is another option but may affect meat.

Cows & Sheep: Neck is safest—protects valuable meat cuts.

Pigs: In the neck, just behind the ear.

Chickens: Into the breast muscle.

2. Subcutaneous (Sub Q) Injections – Under the Skin
Gentler and easier. Good for many vaccines and meds.

Goats: In the armpit area or shoulder.

Cows & Sheep: Behind the shoulder or over the ribs.

Pigs: In the flank or behind the ear.

Chickens: In the loose skin at the back of the neck.

3. Intravenous (IV) Injections – Into a Vein
Fast-acting but should be done by trained hands only.

Goats, Cows, Sheep: Jugular vein (side of the neck).

Pigs: Usually in the ear vein.

Chickens: Sometimes in the wing vein (rare).

4. Intramammary Injections – For Udder Infections
Used to treat mastitis in females.

Goats, Cows, Sheep: Medication is inserted gently into the teat with a clean, sterile tube.

Not used in pigs or chickens.

Important Tip:
Always follow proper hygiene and dosage, and consult your local veterinarian when in doubt.

Your animals deserve safe and effective care—let’s keep them healthy together!
