On this day, May 31st, we remember Ćvariste Galois, the brilliant young mathematician who, before his 21st birthday, founded Galois Theoryāsolving a 350-year-old puzzle about which polynomials can be solved by radicals.
Galois lived fiercelyānot just in math, but in politics. His activism led to imprisonment, and tragically, he died in a duel at just 20.
Yet in one final night, he scribbled out ideas that would revolutionize mathematics forever.
