Jigjiga University Researchers Contribute to Groundbreaking Study on Khat Use and Mental Health in Ethiopia's Somali Region

Researchers from Jigjiga University have contributed to a landmark study that reveals a strong association between problematic khat use and mental health conditions in Ethiopia's Somali Regional State. The study, recently published in BMJ Mental Health, provides the first population-based evidence on the relationship between problematic khat use and mental health challenges in the region. The findings were highlighted in a recent report by King's College London. The research is based on a household survey involving 844 participants from Jigjiga and Kabridahar.

The study found that 18.6% of participants experienced major depression, 11.1% met the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and 5.7% reported suicidal thoughts. Overall, 21.8% of participants were found to have at least one significant mental health condition. Researchers also discovered that individuals with problematic khat use were more than twice as likely to experience depression, PTSD, suicidal ideation, and other mental health disorders compared with those who did not have problematic khat use.

The findings provide important evidence to support the development of mental health services, substance-use interventions, and evidence-based public policies in the Somali Region. The study also emphasizes the urgent need for targeted mental health services and further research to better understand the complex relationship between khat use and mental health.

This collaborative research was led by a team of national and international researchers from Jigjiga University (JJU), the University of Kabridahar (UoK), King's College London (KCL), the University of Edinburgh, Addis Ababa University (AAU), Dalarna University, and the Somali Regional Health Bureau (SRHB).

From ideas to products. From products to impact

Jigjiga University’s Center for Employment & Entrepreneurship Development (CEED) successfully concluded yesterday the 3-day Pre-Incubation Training Programme under the Green Business Incubation Programme.

Over the three days, our selected entrepreneurs explored Design Thinking, Green Business Concepts, Financial Readiness, Pitching, and Professional Communication—building the knowledge and confidence needed to take their business ideas to the next level.

Now, the real work begins.

The participants are preparing for the Pitch Day, where they will have the opportunity to present their products and businesses. Until then, our mentors will continue supporting them through one-on-one and group mentorship, helping them refine their business models, strengthen their products, improve their pitches, and prepare to compete.

From ideas → products → pitches → impact. 🚀🌱

A big appreciation to everyone who contributed to making the training a success, and congratulations to our entrepreneurs for completing this important milestone.

🎬 DAY 1 | PRE-INCUBATION TRAINING KICKS OFF

Ideas. Participation. Innovation.

Today, Jigjiga University officially kicked off the 3-Day Pre-Incubation Training Programme under the Green Business Incubation Programme, bringing together selected aspiring entrepreneurs for an intensive learning and development experience.

The first day focused on Design Thinking, equipping participants with practical approaches to understand problems, identify opportunities, generate ideas, and develop solutions centered on real user needs.

What made the day particularly exciting was the active participation and engagement of the entrepreneurs. Through discussions, exercises, teamwork, and practical activities, participants moved beyond theory and began applying design thinking to their own business ideas.

This is only the beginning.

Over the next two days, the cohort will continue building the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to strengthen their business ideas and prepare for the next stage of their entrepreneurial journey.
