The results of the 60th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad have been announced!
The largest competition for young chemists is being held this year in Russia, in the city of Moscow, from April 15 to 23.
Gold medals were awarded to students from Russia, China, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Hungary, and Israel.
Silver medals were awarded to participants from teams representing Russia, Uzbekistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, Belarus, and Mongolia.
Bronze medals were won by young chemists from Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Japan, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, North Macedonia, and Armenia.
The Best Theorist of the Olympiad is Bowen Tan (China).
The Best Experimentalist is Zihan Wang (China).
The Lunin Prize (1st degree) was awarded to Zihan Wang (China).
The 2nd degree prize went to Hoang Minh Ngo (Vietnam).
The 3rd degree prize was awarded to Bowen Tan (China).
The Olympiad is one of the most prestigious school chemistry competitions in the world, with its international status recognized by UNESCO.

"I was attracted to particle physics because of three famous names, Nishina, Tomonaga and Yukawa, who were the founders of particle physics in Japan," said physics laureate Yoichiro Nambu, who gave us a better understanding of elementary particles and their interactions.

Nambu discovered the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics. This earned him the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics.

‘Hidden Figure’ Mary W. Jackson

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine announced Wednesday the agency’s headquarters building in Washington, D.C., will be named after Mary W. Jackson, the first African American female engineer at NASA.
Jackson started her NASA career in the segregated West Area Computing Unit of the agency’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Jackson, a mathematician and aerospace engineer, went on to lead programs influencing the hiring and promotion of women in NASA's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers. In 2019, she was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
“Mary W. Jackson was part of a group of very important women who helped NASA succeed in getting American astronauts into space. Mary never accepted the status quo, she helped break barriers and open opportunities for African Americans and women in the field of engineering and technology,” said Bridenstine. “Today, we proudly announce the Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters building. It appropriately sits on ‘Hidden Figures Way,’ a reminder that Mary is one of many incredible and talented professionals in NASA’s history who contributed to this agency’s success. Hidden no more, we will continue to recognize the contributions of women, African Americans, and people of all backgrounds who have made NASA’s successful history of exploration possible.”

In 1924 Albert Einstein predicted a new state of matter, the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) on the basis of quantum formulations by the Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose. Ever since, physicists tried to achieve this new fundamental state of matter.

Seventy years passed before it finally happened on 5 June 1995. Eric Cornell and Carl Wieman at the University of Colorado Boulder NIST-JILA lab proved the phenomenon when they produced the first gaseous condensate in a rarefied gas of rubidium atoms at an extremely low temperature. They received the Nobel Prize in 2001.

Image: Cooling rubidium atoms to less than 170 billionths of a degree above absolute zero caused the individual atoms to condense into a "superatom" behaving as a single entity. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has decided to award the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.”

This year’s medicine laureates have discovered how the immune system is kept in check. The body’s powerful immune system must be regulated, or it may attack our own organs. Brunkow, Ramsdell and Sakaguchi have been awarded this year’s medicine prize for their groundbreaking discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance that prevents the immune system from harming the body.

The laureates identified the immune system’s security guards, regulatory T cells, which prevent immune cells from attacking our own body.

The laureates’ discoveries launched the field of peripheral tolerance, spurring the development of medical treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases. This may also lead to more successful transplantations. Several of these treatments are now undergoing clinical trials.
