The Hawassa University Institute of Technology Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering Department of Textile & Garment Engineering organized the Miss Hawassa University 2026 G.C. Beauty & Fashion Show Contest and the seminar on "Ethiopian Textile and Apparel Industry: Current Performance and Future Prospects."

Mr. Abenezer Nigussie, the department head, officially opened the program, welcoming guests, staff, students, and industry stakeholders to this historic occasion.

A keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Kassahun Gashu, Dean of the Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering, who emphasized the profound importance of such programs for the department. Dr. Kassahun highlighted how the fashion show and beauty contest serve as a vital bridge between academic training and real-world industry exposure—nurturing creative talent, building professional confidence in students, and strengthening the department's ties with the Ethiopian textile and apparel sector. He noted that this initiative reflects the faculty's commitment to producing graduates who are not only technically proficient but also industry-ready and innovation-driven.

📢 AN EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT
As part of our ongoing curriculum revision program, we are pleased to announce that the "Garment Engineering Program" within our department is currently in the process of being renamed to the "Fashion Engineering Program"—a forward-looking step that better reflects the evolving nature of the industry, global trends in fashion education, and our commitment to producing innovative, industry-ready graduates. This renaming marks an exciting new chapter for the garment engineering program, specifically as it embraces a broader and more dynamic academic identity.

THE FASHION SHOW
The runway featured stunning product designs created by Ms. Feven Dereje, Ms. Mekdes (Azrar Fashion), and Ms. Tsion—former department students who now run their own fashion houses in Hawassa City, demonstrating the entrepreneurial success of the department's graduates.
Additionally, Enat Fashion Design and Betty Design participated in the fashion show by bringing their collections.

The Department also proudly showcased its own fashion products, designed by Department staff members, reflecting the depth of creative and technical expertise within the team.

A seminar was conducted on the topic " Ethiopian Textile & Apparel Industry: Current Performance & Future Prospects"

May 14/2026

Academic staff and IoT leaders gathered today at Hawassa University’s Institute of Technology for a high-level strategic seminar to confront severe supply chain shocks and chart a recovery roadmap for Ethiopia and East Africa's textile sector.

The session opened with a welcoming speech by Dr. Gbrechristos Nurye, followed by an opening and keynote speech from Dr. Mihret Dananto, who emphasized that manufacturers must rapidly pivot toward national and regional trade blocks. This urgent intervention follows a catastrophic 46% loss in duty-free U.S. exports triggered by the nation's AGOA suspension. Leaders stressed that factories shall immediately overhaul production lines to meet stringent European OEKO-TEX and BSCI certifications while utilizing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to tap into an integrated market of 1.2 billion consumers. The sector's global export ambitions face steep domestic hurdles outlined by seminar presenter Mr. Elias Lemma, who delivered the core briefing on the industry's current bottlenecks and volatile labor dynamics.

Local agriculture fulfills just 60% of the industry’s annual 55,000-metric-ton cotton demand due to ongoing drought and conflict in the primary Afar supply region, while severe foreign exchange scarcity cripples the import of vital dyes and machinery components. Compounding these supply chain disruptions, a domestic inflation rate has severely eroded real wages—which average just $40–$51 USD monthly—driving factory workforce turnover to a crippling 60% to 120% annually, a structural crisis debated extensively during a panel discussion led by Dr. Gebrechristos, Dr. Fentahun Moges, and Dr. Kassahun Gashu. To break this economic gridlock, a sweeping matrix of state reforms and academic partnerships is being deployed across 13 industrial parks backed by over $1.5 billion in investment.

Moderated by Mr. Abenezer Niguse, the forum highlighted how recent policy interventions—including full foreign exchange liberalization, corporate tax cuts, and the establishment of a national minimum wage board—are being paired with technical solutions from the university's Textile & Garment Engineering Department. The seminar concluded with a specialized way forward remark by Dr. Mihret emphasizing on strengthening high-value, sustainable domestic workforce that can successfully transition into premium, automated global market.

HU-IoT hosts a seminar on “Transforming Cities in the Global South."
***//***
May 2, 2026
Hawassa University Institute of Technology (HU-IoT) successfully organized a high-level seminar on Transforming Cities in the Global South: The Praxis of Corridor and Riverside Developments in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Mihret Dananto, the institute's scientific director, noted urbanization as one of the most defining trends of our time, especially across Africa, and mentioned the rapid transformation of Addis Ababa as a bold experiment in city planning through corridor development, which is normally a new and the only type in the world designed to modernize infrastructure, enhance urban mobility, and improve the quality of life for millions. He also added that Hawassa's city development is a blueprint for our own urban evolution, and this seminar provides a vital platform for academic reflection as we implement the third phase of the corridor project.

The seminar was officially opened by Dr. Tafesse Matewos, Vice President for Research and Collaboration at HU. In his opening speech, he stated that theories, mainly originating from the North, have dominated urban discourse in the global South for decades and highlighted the challenges facing our urban growth, which include climate vulnerabilities and infrastructure deficiencies that call for domestic, workable solutions. He described how such seminars bring solutions to the aforementioned problems and mentioned the Addis Ababa city experience as a unique living laboratory for these approaches. He also added that Hawassa University, as one of the pioneering public learning institutions in this country, significantly contributes to the development of this country; definitely, this agenda is very important not only for our staff but also for all students of urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and all of us.

The keynote speech was delivered by Dr.-Ing. Eshetayehu Kinfu, Head, Strategic Programs Management Office, Addis Ababa City Administration. In his keynote address titled “Praxis of Corridor and Riverside Developments in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia."

The seminar ended with a stimulating discussion and a question-and-answer segment, allowing participants to share their valuable insights.
