On The Entropy of Written Afan Oromo 25/01/2022

Researchers at our school published work “On the Entropy of Written Afan Oromo” in the EAI AFRICOMM 2021, 13th EAI International Conference on e‐Infrastructure and e‐Services for Developing Countries.

The idea in the paper is to apply information theoretic concepts such as entropy to understand local languages' information content and look for efficient source coding techniques that can compress (for now written form of) these languages for efficient storage and transmission. Previously, a similar work on the Amharic language was published. These works are believed to pave the way for the development of language specific applications for local languages. The current publication is part of an ongoing research addressing local languages.

The presentation on the research is now available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/OQ7czzfV1h8.

Dear respected friends and/or colleagues of the late Ato Sintayehu

One year has passed since our friend and colleague Sintayehu Chala has passed away. As you may recall, we have launched an effort to mobilize former friends and/or colleagues and acquaintances of Sintayehu to raise funds that will be used to support the family and in particular his two kids until at least they complete High School and join college. To this end, we had planned to raise Birr 420,000 and in the last one year we managed to raise around Birr 310,000 which is about 74% achievement of the plan. We are satisfied with the result obtained and we would like to thank you all for your contribution and cooperation. There are still some outstanding pledges which are not yet fulfilled. We would like to use this occasion to remind all those who haven’t yet fulfilled your pledges to do so as soon as possible. As a reminder, the bank account is at Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Selassie branch in the name of Mohammed Abdo, Kebrework Alemayehu and Getachew Teshome. The account number is: 1000234581574.

The expense incurred so far stands at Birr 15,822.00. This expense includes school tuition fee for the 2011 EC academic year, school uniform and books for the two kids. The kids go to the same school they used to go. Fortunately, we haven’t yet incurred cost of house rent since the family is still living in the house provided by the university whose rent is small.

Finally, we have learnt that Sintayehu’s family is one of the winners of the second round 40/60 condominium housing lottery that was drawn this March 2019. This is excellent news and we will keep you informed if there is anything we can do to support in that regard.

Thanking you all for your effort, we will continue to keep you informed on the status at least yearly, God willing.

With best regards

The organizing committee
