ሓምለ 5 (Jul 12) A Day of Pain, Memory, and the Pursuit of Justice
For many displaced Tigrayans, July 12 (ሓምለ 5) is not a day of celebration. It is a day that recalls years of suffering, displacement, loss, and unresolved demands for justice.
Many victims and survivors associate this date with individuals they hold responsible for violence, human rights abuses, and the continued displacement of communities from Western Tigray. They point to allegations surrounding the Mai Kadra massacre, the forced displacement of civilians, and other grave abuses that have left deep and lasting scars on countless families.
They also remember the tragic events of June 25, 2021, when a group of Tigrayan civilians reportedly attempted to flee from Humera to Sudan. According to survivor accounts, many never reached safety. The victims are remembered not as statistics, but as human beings whose lives, dreams, and futures were cut short.
Five years later, thousands remain displaced, separated from their homes, lands, and livelihoods. Many families continue to endure hardship, uncertainty, hunger, and the pain of prolonged exile.
The memories of the victims cannot be erased, and the calls for truth, justice, accountability, and the safe return of displaced people cannot be silenced. Lasting peace is built not on forgetting the past, but on acknowledging suffering, ensuring accountability, and restoring the rights and dignity of those affected.
We can never forget, because the wounds remain open and the suffering continues to this day.
