Return of Ethiopian Paleontological Samples Preserved in France

On 15 June 2026, the CFEE attended the handover ceremony of paleontological samples originally discovered in Ethiopia and preserved in France by the CEREGE – Centre for Research and Education in Environmental Geosciences, Aix-en-Provence.

Returned to the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, these samples were collected during scientific missions conducted in Ethiopia in the 1960s and 1970s. They come from long-standing research collections that had remained in France for several decades within the framework of Franco-Ethiopian scientific cooperation.
This return of scientific specimens is another marker of a very dynamic scientific and heritage cooperation between Ethiopia and France. It reflects a shared commitment to the preservation, study, and transmission of Ethiopia’s exceptional paleontological and archaeological heritage.

The CFEE is pleased to have taken part in this significant moment, alongside the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, CEREGE, and institutional and scientific partners committed to strengthening research, conservation, training, and public outreach for future generations.

What can hippos tell us about ancient ecosystems?

In the Lower Omo Valley, fossil skulls, mandibles and teeth help researchers reconstruct landscapes that existed 2 to 3 million years ago - environments once shared by early human ancestors and many other animal species.

Jean-Renaud Boisserie, paleontologist and co-leader of the Omo Group Research Expedition, studies how hippos changed over time, in both morphology and diversity. While only two hippo species live in Africa today, several species could coexist in the past.
Through hippos, fossils and ancient landscapes, this research sheds light on the ecological worlds in which early humans evolved.

Behind every ceramic fragment, there is a story of ancient techniques, gestures, and time.

In Addis Ababa, Desta Haileyesus Gebregzabher, PhD candidate at Aix-Marseille University, is studying pottery excavated from Kwiha and Bilet.
By sorting and recording fragments according to stratigraphic units, colours, surface treatments, depth, and decoration patterns, her research helps trace variations in pottery-making techniques across different phases of occupation.

A patient work of reconstruction — piece by piece, layer by layer.
